Six to four is still enquired for, but the best offer is now five to four on. Crane, a Sydney sportsman, has backed Searle for £I6OO at 8 to 2 on. H.M.S. Eepiugle has hoisted the British flag on Humphrey Island, Tiesson Island, and the Manlike group. It is stated that a man named Piiree, a plasterer, a native of Bn'xham, lower Devon, whose address is at present unknown, is entitled to the sum of £1,400,000 by the death of a clergyman in Sydney, Peter Jackson and Jem Smith, the pugilists, are arranging a fight. Despite the efforts being made to prevent the return of General Boulanger, the Government declare that he is ineligible fcr election unless be sets the verdict aside by returning. The Prefects have been secretly directed to prevent the return of General Boulanger’s followers. Sent. 6.
General Boulanger has written to M, Tirard, claiming to be tried by courtmartial, Sept, 7. After creating a special court to secure General Boulanger being declared an outlaw, the .Government have been compelled, although be is absent, to accept bis nomination for a seat at the forthcoming general election ; also to permit placards favoring his views being posted. This result has created a good deal of excitement, and has led to dissension in the Cabinet, M. Tirard, the Premier, and M. Constan, Minister of the Interior, dispute the right of General Boulanger to contest a seat, Constantinople, Sept, 7. The Porte will regard a German attack on Bulgaria as a casus belli. Sofia, Sept, 6.

Sydney, Sept. 6. The General Assembly last night passed a vote for the renewal of the San Francisco mail service. The iffect of tbo Chinese Restriction Act is exemplified by the fact that there have only been five arrivals of Chinese and no less than @CO departures during the past eight months. From June Ist to date 1965 persons arrived in thig colony from New Zealand, and about 500 returned. The Daily Telegraph says these figures aro startling for New Zealand, and if the other colonies show a similar properlion fbe regalt will not bo encouraging,

Melbourne, Sept. 6 . Sir James Lorirner, late Minister of Defence, is dead. ' ~ The amount of gold raised in the colony to date is sifty million ounces,, The Government geologist estimates that the mines will still yield eighty million ounces more.
A serious accident occurred on the Gippsland railway line. A passenger train dashed into a goods train and both engines were telescoped. The stoker of the passenger train was badly hurt and 12 passengers were injured. Brisbane, Sept. 7. An artesian water supply giying a million gallons daily has been struck at Oharlesville, It is believed to be the largest artesian supply in the world. Perth, Sept. 7.
Major-General Edwards states that it is unlikely the Imperial Government will take over the defence of Albany. The Australians will have to provide for it themselves. He thinks the Australian colonies will not establish a practical system of defence without federation, and suggests that the Federal Council should legislate on military matters.
