TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above board took place on Tuesday last. Present—-Messrs J. Fraser, C, Bisaett, W. Snell, and W. GK Aspinall. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Fraser was voted to the chair. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £l7l Os 7d were passed for payment. COEEESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows: Prom Mr W. Bryars, asking that his name might be placed on the roll as owner of the property lately held by Mr L. A. Thruston.—Agreed to. Prom Mr W. Hopkinson, asking that his name might be removed from the roll in respect of part of Native Eeserve 881, which was now in the occupation of the owners.—Hoani Kahn, on behalf of the owners, consenting, the exchange to be made. Prom Mrs Mary Parrell, applying to have her name placed on the roll in respect of part of ES. 4939, Winchester, formerly standing in Mr J. A. Young’s name.—The latter consenting, the application was agreed to.
From Messrs William Tarrant John Barrett, signifying their willing- \ ness to pay half the cost of cleaning the road ditch adjoining their respective paddocks.—The overseer wag instructed to get the work done, Prom Mr E. A. Barker, Chairman of the South Orari Eiver Board, stating that at a meeting of the board held on August 13th a special order was made directing the Temuka Eoad Board to make, levy, and collect a general rate of one farthing in the £ on the rateable value of all rateable property in the South Orari Eiver Board district for the year ending March 31,1890. Mr Barker applied to have the necessary steps taken to give effect to same. • Prom Mr W. Wills, returning officer, notifying that Mr W. 0. Aspinall being the only candidate nominated for election to the board in the room of Mr J. T, M, Hayhurst, he had, therefore, been declared duly elected.
From the Clerk to the County Council, enclosing cheque for £l7l 14s, amount of subsidy received from Colonial Treasurer. From the same, drawing attention to the report of the water-race ranger at Saugitata referring to a stoppage of certain pipes by Mr T. Knight, and ask- . - ing that the board’s overseer might be A allowed to attend to same.—The board could not interfere,. obstruction being on private property.
Prom the Property Tax Commissioner, requesting that the following entry be made on the r011:—C59,229, Presbyterian Church Trustees, part Section 6383, 11a 3r 12p, £640, Prom the Secretary Education Board, acknowledging receipt of communication of the 12th, and stating that the board did not pay rates. Prom the Secretary North Canterbury Education Board, rt rates due for R.S. 2692 and Reserve 1254, —The board had no interest in any property south of the Orari.
Erom Mr Gimpson, asking the board’s approval of the removal of his slaughtering premises from present site to E.S. 7434 and 8888, so that he might intimate the same to the County Council. —The board saw no objection to the matter.
Erom Mr J. Kelland, asking that his assessment might be reduced in respect to a portion of land taken by the board for road purposes.—-Complied with. TENDERS/ The following tenders were received : Contract No. 9—Carting shingle for main road: Only one tender was received, and the price exceeding the overseer’s estimate, the overseer was authorised to invite fresh tenders for the same, or, in the event of wet weather setting in, the overseer to have the work done by the contractor who has the contract for repairs. Contract No. 10 Shingling Wareing’s road: P. O’Mara, £35 16s 8d; W. Hopkinson, £24 (accepted). Contract No. 11—Cutting drain, Talbot’s road; Roberts and Hamilton, £lB 10s; Geo. Latimer, £7 15s (accepted). Contract No. 12—Cleaning Canal, drain; D. Mclnnes, £4 10s; G. Latimer, £4 6s; R. Williams, £3 10s (accepted). INTERVIEWS. Mr Malarkey applied to the board lor some short lengths of old bridge timber.—The overseer was authorised to deal with same. Mr Stewart, Orari, waited upon the board in respect of an exchange of roads. The only owners affected would he the applicant and Mr Bissett. Mr Stewart intimated his willingness to pay the expense of transfer of the road from the board to himself and to the board. There was no traffic upon the road.—Mr Bissett said that he had objected to the previous application, but thst as Mr Stewart offered to give a road that would meet his (Mr Bissett’s) case he should not oppose it.—The board discussed the matter, and considered that the application was one which only affected Mr Stewart and was not of general benefit to the public. It was, therefore, decided that the application could not be entertained. The clerk was instructed to search for the minutes referring to a previous exchange, so that the same might be completed. miscellaneous. Mr Bissett applied for a crossing to his land on Educational Reserve 1400. —The application was granted, all the other occupiers having been accorded similar privileges. M r Eraser said that he had been applied to by Mr McKinnon for some improvements to the road approaching his property. The cost of same would be slight.—lhe overseer was authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £lO in making the necessary improvements. Mr Aspinall drew attention to the condition of the new road leading to the mill. At present it was almost impossible to get on to it from the main road.—lt was explained that at present the road was not under the board’s control, the conditions under which it was arranged to be taken over not having been complied with. —Mr Aspinall proposed to put a load or two of boulders at the crossing from the main road, and no objection was raised to his doing so. overseer's report. The overseer’s report was read as follows: — To the Chaiiman and Members. Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report for the past mouth as follows Tenders have been invited for the works authorised at last meeting. The contractor for shingle repairs has just completed repairs to Rolleston’s road, and is now starting with Badham’s road. Contract No. 7, cleaning drain Paterson’s and McNair’s road, will ba completed in a few days, and I have drawn a cheque for payment when finished. Gorse notices have been served, and duplicates of same are laid on the table. I have several incompleted jobs on hand, but expect to get them all finished during the present month. Some twelve-inch pipes are required.
Ee Mr Wareing’s Application—dyne’s road drain leceives ihe drainage from all the land on the upper side of the road, and originally discharged it into the Canal drain. About fifteen months ago the owners of Educational Reserve 1211 had a drain cut through the reserve and a culvert put across CJyne’s road at a level fifteen inches below the bottom of the road drain, and diverted the water, which now runs through that part of the educational reserve occupied by Mr Wareing, and eventually into the mill creek. The place where the culvert referred to has been put in the road is eighteen chains ifrom the junction of Clyne’s mud and the Jdit'iling J'/own road, and to clean out the drain for this distance would cost about as suggested by Me Wareing, would probably cost —, 1 have the honor, etc., F. AiuJHEjt. It was resolved that the board take no further action in the matter of Mr Wareing’s application. He was authorised to procure pipes required.
Mr Snell stated that it was probable that he should have to make application for a crossing to a certain portion of his property, and the overseer was authorised to report upon the same by next meeting. The meeting then terminated-
