A number of Chinamen residing in Cuba street, Wellington, made a savage assault on Thursday night on an expressman named Samuel Elliott. It appears that Elliott went to the shop of Wong Shee for onions, and being suspicious of not receiving full weight insisted on some more being placed in the scales. Elliott repeated bis demand, and as Wong Shee still refused he commenced to help himself. This action started a row, and three other Chinamen in the shop, seizing broom handles, went to the assistance of Wong Shee, and belabored Elliott over the head and shoulders. Elliott escaped into the street, but not before he received several severe scalp wounds, from which the blood flowed freely. A large pppwd. collected round the shop, and the windows were broken by slones. Ultimately the police clearer! * the thoroughfare. The Chinamen will j be proceeded agaiust. *
