GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. On Eriday, Mr McLean gave notice to introduce & Bill providing for the election of school committees, and Mr Walker gave notice to introduce the Dog Registration Act Amendment Bill. The Chinese Immigrants Act Amendment Act Continuance Bill was passed.
HOU3B OP REPRESENTATIVES. On Friday, Replying to a question the Minister of Lauds said that any explanation of the lottery system in use in disposing of Crown Lands would occupy him tome time. Many people put in applications on behalf of themselves and members of their families. Under the ballot system a deposit was necessary. It was not true that people Bad to go away because there was no land available. Mr Marchant moved the adjournment of the House. In his opinion reform of the land laws was urgently required. Major Steward spoke strongly in the same strain, and thought that the House should sit if necessary two months loger in order to amend the law and remove abuses which existed. ' A lengthy debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment. On resuming it was agreed that the House at its rising adjourn till 2.80 on Monday, for consideration of unopposed local Bills. The Public Works Act Amendment BUI was further considered in Committee. Several new clauses were added and the Bill was reported with amendments. The House rose at 1.30 a.m.
