The Shotover Big Beach (Otago) returns 101 ounces of retorted gold for a fortnight’s work. The Dunedin City Licensing Bench has granted the Exhibition! license, there being no opposition. Mrs Stewart died suddenly at St. Kilda, Dunedin, on Saturday while feeding fowls. She had an apoplectic fit.

D. B. Orchard, an Auckland commission agent and sharebroker, doing considerable business, has been remanded on two charges of forging promissory notes, and bail refused. It is said other charges are pending. He was arrested on board a steamer at Eussell. Thomas Martin’s fellmongery at Kaikorai Yalley, Otago, was destroyed by fire, supposed to have been caused by the boiling over of a pot of tar left on the fire. There was a large quantity of wool, sheepskins, etc., in the sheds, and everything was destroyed. There were no insurances, and Mr Martin estimates his loss at £7OO. He only recently started, and the fire has quite ruined him.
