BAZAAR AND PROMENADE CONCERT.
A bazaar, gift auction, and promenade concert in aid of the funds of the Welcome Retreat Lodge, 1.0.G.T., Geraldine, took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday last. The bazaar was opened at 3 p.m. On looking into the room it was seen that a very creditable collection of useful and fancy goods had been made and had been tastefully arranged on a large stall at the far end of the hall. A large number of dolls of all sizes, beautifully worked sofa cushions, brackets, mantel drapes, and a host of useful sundries and nicknacks had been gathered together, and presented quite an attractive appearance. On i the right-hand side was a refreshment stall, abundantly supplied with provisions, and several small tables, where twos and threes could have a social little supper. On the same side, in the front corner, was the wizard’s hall and the inevitable bran pie; in the left hand corner was the farm produce and a cage of tame young white rats. In the centre of the hall, on a raised carpeted dais, was the piano. A considerable amount of trouble had evidently been expended in decorating the hall with ferns and evergreens. On the right the letters 1.0.G.T. had been made with large ferns. On this side the motto “ Welcome all ” had also been put up, while on the other side the words “ Whatsoever ye would that others should do unto you do ye even so to them ” were displayed on a banner. In the evening the building was packed with people, the price of admission being only sixpence. The stall was under the supervision of Mesdames Dunlop and Pye. Among those who assisted with the same were Misses Dunlop, Burns (2), Gaiger, Slonehouse (2), and McLean. During the evening pianoforte solos were rendered by Misses Andrews, M. Dunlop, and Shiers; pianoforte duet by the Misses Skiers ; and songs by Messrs Aitken (“ Bonnie Scotland,J X
Adore Thee,”) Jackson, (“Godwin Sands,”) and Flowers, (“ The Old Brigade.”) Mr W. S. Maslin sold by auction the farm produce and a quantity of other goods. A dance was held afterwards, to which a large number of young people stayed. The financial result of the effort put forth by the members of the lodge and their friends should be highly satisfactory to the promoters.
