The provisions of the Tithes Bill have been altered, giving a remedy against the occupier, he ia his torn being able to recover from the owner. The alteration brought the Ministry into grave discredit, The Speaker rnled that the changes made constituted it a new Bill, and it has been withdrawn. Government will introduce.the Bill again next year. In the House of Assembly, Mr McLean has given notice of motion that as the farmers are entitled to a larger measure of protection it is desirable to impose a uniform duty of three shillings per cental on all grain and pulse ; also to increase the stock tax, Mr Gillies (Premier) accepted the motion as one of want of confidence, and the House adjourned until Tuesday, when the discussion will bo taken, August 20. In the Supreme Court to-day the case against Dr LeFeore, M.L.O.jClairaing £13,200 for alleged wrongful sitting as a member of the Legislative Council
without the necessary qualification, was heard. The ’ plaintiff, Mr A. McCall alleged that Dr LePeore, named in the declaration, owned some property, which he had not held for the specified time prior to his election. The jury returned a verdict for £13,000. -Sydney, August 19. The Star this evening publishes an extraordinary charge against the late Captain Uansby, of the steamer Dtipleix, who was killed by a tram-car a few days ago. It alleges that on the last trip of the Dupleis from Wellington to Sydney, while the vessel was in Cook Strait, Captain Hansby was in an incapable condition, and that the vessel was in great danger of being wrecked when off Peloros Sound. The chief officer at the request of the passengers and crew took charge and saved the vessel, but when he reached Sydney was discharged, and the officers and crew transhipped to another vessel.
