At Clark’s Gill, Bungarie, Eliza Heaney, aged 14, was accidentally shot by her brother, aged 17, The lad was shooting sparrows, when the girl suddenly coming round the corner received the shot in the head. No hopes are entertained of her recovery, Sydney, August 11.
Alfred Chitcber, residing at Bellambi, near Woolongong, attempted to murder bis wife on Saturday by stabbing her in the abdomen with a large clasp knife. He then tried to commit- suicide by stabbing himself with a butcher’s knife. Both were removed to the hospital, where their wounds were found very serious, so much so in the case of the woman that her depositions were taken last night. Chitcber had previously been convicted of ill-using bis wife. They lived apart for some time, bat were latterly reunited. The trial of the prisoners George Johnson and George Bignan, accused of shooting Constable Slater, was concluded yesterday, the jury returning a verdict of not guilty in each case. The bodies of Ban Mason, and the elder Peate were discovered in the Glebe Pit on Sunday. Adelaide, August 13.
A shocking occurrence took place at; Brompton Park, neat Adelaide, this morning. A single woman named Catherine O’Brien was found lying in an outhouse with a still-born female child beside her, and was afterwards safely delivered of a living male child.
