GERALDINE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly meeting of this committee was held iu the schoolhouse on Wednesday evening last. Present —Messrs W. b. Masliu (chairman), J. Kiordan, J. W. Pye, C. B. Sherratt, W. Shiers, and W. 11. Walton. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. :i \X COESESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — Frem the S.C. Board of Education enclosing a resolution passed by the board at its last meeting requesting the various school comraitfcees to inform the board for what purpose other than scholastic the school house would be required during the com- [ mittee's term of office. —It was decided [ to inform the board that the committee did not wish to let the school at any time. Prom the same, advising the committee of £9 2s 6d having been lodged to their credit for incidentals. A circular was also received from the board giving the average attendance of the schools in the South Canterbury district for the quarter ending June 80th 1889, The summary of attendance of the G-eraldine school was shown to be 194 with a weekly average of 261. HEAD MASTEB'S BEPOST. The head master's report for the past four weeks was read, showing the attendance to have been as follows : 199.4, 204.8, 200.7, 196.1, giving an average of 202.2, the highest attendance having been 215. The report also drew attention to the fact that Miss Hawke's tarm of office as pupil teacher would shortly expire and suggested that one should be appointed as first year pupil teacher without salary till the end of the year. It was decided that the chairman should interview Miss Hawke in order to ascertain if she would be willing to remain in her present position at the same salary she is bow receiving. ENABLING BILL. The chairman stated that he had received a copy of the Amended Empowering Bill, the original of which had been materially altered by the Local Bills Committee. Under the amended one the board was compelled to erect a new school on the reserve on the cemetery road, taking it out of the power of the householders or the board to erect one on a site chosen by themselves. After considerable considerable discussion it was unanimously resolved " That the Board of Education be communicated with urging that the Enabling Bill be presented before the House in its original form," VISITORS. Messrs Sherratt and Riordan were appointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2l7s were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
