MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS AT ARUNDEL.
* A meeting of the householders in the Arundel school district was held at the house of Mr Thomas Pithie, Peel Forest road, on Saturday evening last, for the purpose of electing a School Committee for the district. There were present—Messrs A. Rae, A. W. Campbell, E. Tarbotton, T. r Pithie, E. Evans, J. Charles, 0. Lewis, \ Q-. Eae, and Cooke. Mr J. Charles was voted to the chair. .A mass of correspondence, which liml passed between the 8.0. Board of Education and the householders in the district, was laid on the table, and referred to from time to time during the course of the evening. The great necessity that exists for a school to be erected in the district was very freely discussed. At present the children have to go either to the Orari Bridge or the Scotsburn school, and in the case of those living on the lower boundary of the Arundel district to the South Eangitata school. Those going to the latter school have to travel some 7 miles night and morning, those to Scotsburn about miles, and those to the Orari Bridge a little farther. There are no less than 69, children, in the district, about 30 being of school age. An attempt was made to get a school in the district some five years ago, and ever since then the householders hare been trying to get the school erected. In October, 1887, "the boundaries of the Arundel school district were gazetted, and 10 acres of land bn reserve No. 2758 were set apart as a site for the school. Since then a committee for the district has been elected annually, and has tried to obtain a school building, the committee guaranteeing £ls towards the amount required, and offering to cart all the material to the site free of cost. The Board have from time to time promised that the school should be erected when the funds were available, tut apparently the necessary funds are not yet to hand, and in the meantime the householders have to send their children the distances mentioned above in order to obtain for them the rudiments of an edupation. It was decided on Saturday evening to use every means in the power of the committee to obtain a school for the district. The election had been necessitated owing to a ballot not having been taken at the previous election in accordance with the Education Act, there having been only seven persons nominated and the same declared elected. The following is the result of the polling on Saturday evening .
