The following ie a copy of a letter received by Lieut. Colonel Bailey, commanding the South Canterbury district: —

“ Sir, — I have the honor to inform yon that Major General Edwards, the officer deputed by the Horae authorities to inspect the Colonial Volunteer Forces, will arrive at the Bluff on the 9th prox., and I have to request that you will be good enough to arrange for the corps at Timaru and those within easy disianoa by rail to assemble for inspec ion on a date that will hereafter be named. “It is expected that those country corps who attend the parade will turn out at least two-thirds of their strength. I understand that. Major General Edwards is desirous of seeing practice firing, eic., and'if"the ground permits of it in the vicinity of the Rifle range, it nrght possibly bo as well to assemble the volunteers in that neighborhood.—l have, etc., “ C, Hwmfhrey, Colonel, “Assistant Under-Secretary Defence. “Wellington, Aug. 6th.”
