Edward McGlaahen, one of the pioneer settlers rqf Otago, died on Wednesday night,’ aged’ 72. _ George White, late superintendent of the Nelson Lunatic Asylum, has been committed for trial at Nelson for embezzling three sums of money rsceived for produce raised at the asylum. Other charges Are to be preferred at the sittings of the Supreme Court* < ' r"- . A six roomed house in N.E. Valley, Dunedin, owned and occupied by H. Kinnmount, has been burned. Insurance £406; estimated loss above insurance £2OO, The reported prevalence of typhoid fever m Wellingtonproves to be largely exaggerated. The city authorities addressed communications to twelve medical men on the subject, with a request that they would each state the number of the typhoid cases they were attending. Mr Page, the town clerk, states that eleven doctors have replied, the result being that only four patients are reported as being attended" them. The medical profession is almost unanimous in asserting that the city at present s s singularly free from the visitation of fever.
Richard Campbell, 76 .years, old, servant at an hotel at Grey mouth, was found firowiied in a small zinc-lined case in the hotel garden. The verdict was “ found drowned.” ’
Williams, a carpenter, was found drowned in a lagoon at Gr. ymouth on Wednesday morning.
