CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.

( The following is the Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday, August 2nd, 1889 : London cables during the past week have , noted: a slight improvement in Ithe wheat market, but as we have no tonnage available the influence on this market has been -nil, still we may hope that tie improvement may have the effect of drawing the American immense surplus away from our adjoining colonies. Locally we have no improvement to note, except that a few sales of tuscan have been made at our quotations. Sydney market is still inactive, with large stocks on hand. Occasional enquiries for small lines of hunters and pearl occur among the local millers, but business is of a very meagre nature. Oats are dull, and with the large stocks held in Melbourne we don’t anticipate any improvement for some time to come. Barley, with the exception of extra prime malting, is hard to quit at quotations. Beans have improved, and the bulk have been cleared for London. Grass seed has a good country enquiry for spring sowing. Potatoes have had a busy time, but at time ot writing are rather quiet, awaiting the effect the large shipments now on the water have on the Sydny market. We quote as follows : Wheat—Tuscan, 3s 6d to 3s 7d; pearl, 3s 4d; hunters, 3s 2d to 3s 3d ; broken, 2s 6d to 2s 9d.
