With regard to the disastrous mon-, dation of Northern Kwan-Tunsr, by which 6000 livas were lcßt, the HongKong Daily Press of June 17 says : •• Intelligenre has been received from . Kiayihg Chaa perfecture, in the Northeast of Kwan-Tung, that early on the : ibe rooming of June 2 the Chan Pinj* and Ping Yuen districts were flooded by the bursting of a waterspout or a tornsdo, described by the Chinese as a water dragon, and the level country , flooded with three cheons (nearly 36ft) . of water. The villages of Chae Kon end Ha Ku-"3ui, in the Ping Yuen district, and Cbeong Tan, Hop Lui, Ngai Ku, Bsm Chan Kiu, and San Pobui, in the Chan Picg district, were overflowed, many houses were wholly 6wept away, while others were inundated. Upwards of 6000 lives were lost, many ot the ,onhappy people being carried away by the force of the flood and others drowned in their houses. Large numbers #f stock ware also engulfed, and an immense amount of "property destroyed. The adjoining villages of Fhek Cnai, IVung Yuen, and Yew Tong, in the Rbeung Hoag district of Tingchanfu, Fukien, were "likewise flooded, numerous houses demolished, and several hundreds of lives loßt. Over 10,000 persons, survivors

of the disaster, have been rendered homeless and destitu e. The local a'uthnrittps are doing thoir best to relieve the destitute, but the task is n difficult one, the distress being so great, snd officials have sent down to Hongkong and Caaton to endeavor to procure assistance."
