FOOTBALL.

ASHBURTON BOVERS V. TEMUKA. A match between the above clubs took place in the Temuka Park yesterday, and was won by Temuka by two tries (2 points) to one try (1 point). Temuka throughout the game played a man short. Orr captained the Aahburton team and Dyson the Temuka. Dyson won the toss, and elected to defend the eastern goal. Ashburton kicked off, and followed up well, but Mendelson returned quickly for Temuka, who soon, had thenopponents in difficulty, and, after some scrimmaging, the Ashburton boys were forced down. Knight kicked out with a good, long kick, and the ball' was rushed down into Temuka's quarters, but J. Velvin soon ' relieved by a kick out of touch. Shortly after this a free kick was secured by Temuka, and G. Velvin made a grand' kick at goal, but it went over the post, and. Ashburton were r again forced down. On being kicked out, the ball was soon rushed back, and, after some scrimmaging, in which G-unnion and Garr were to the front, Dyson secured the first try for Temuka. Mendelson took the kick, but failed to score. The game for a time was pretty fast, Orr, Kidd, and Knight playing well for Ashburton, the latter's kicking being good. Scrum followed scrum, Temuka generally • pushing their opponents , back, till Mendelson, from a pass, got across the line for Temuka, G-. Velvin took the kick, but failed to score. The play which followed till time was called consisted in the main of scrums. Dyson set the ball rolling after, but it was quickly returned by Knight, when Mendelson made a good run down the line to the Ashburton twenty-fives. On the ball being thrown out Austin secured it, and took it close to the Ashburton line. Here a series of scrums took place, the Ashburton forwards playing well to stop their opponents from getting across. From one -of the scrumß McLeod passed to G. Velvin, who made a pot at the goal, but it was given as a poster. On being kicked out it was rushed back again to the Ashburton line, where scrum after scrum resulted, but the Temuka men could not get across, and on heeling out Leadshain passed the ball to Mendelson, who made a pot at the goal, but failed to put it over the bar. From the kick out Ashburton rushed the ball up, and it went out of play at half way. From the throw in Kidd (Ashburton) got on a dribble, and took it to the Temuka line, where he touched it down, but no goal resulted from the kipk. From this out the game was in
