AUCTIONEERS' REPORT.
TIMARU. Messrs William Collins and Co., report a slack demand for milling wheat. Considerable quantities are arriving weekly in Timaru from Ashburton; as a result the South Canterbury grower has to take a back seat for the time being. A line of 10,000 bushels, grown south of Timaru, was sold in Oainaru lately, and only netted the grower 2s ll|d. Tuscan is worth 8s 3d ; white wheats, 3s Id; red chaff, 2s lOd to 8s; fowl wheat (according to sample) Is 6d broken, 2s 6d to 2s 9d wholeOats—Danish, 2s 3d to 2s sd; milling, 2s Gd to 2s 8d; Tartarians, 2s 6d. Potatoes, 70s to 755; kidneys, 100 s per ton on trucks at Timaru.
Mr E. R. Guinness (for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agencv Company, Limited) reporls for tha wpak ending Saturday, July 27tb, as follows :
Washdyke Tarda Cattle : The entries of fat and stores have been about the average, lhe price and demand for the former show a decided improvement, and all lots are quitted at a shade ever late quotations. Stores: The price of this class of stock is at present low, with only a moderate number being offered for sale. Pat Sheep: The market is well supplied, and no improvement in prices has taken place; in fact values have receded, and prime mutton cannot be be quoted at more than 2?d to 2£d per lb for prime quality. At the last two sales the yarding showed a falling off. Various qualities were sent forward from prime to inferior; mest of the lots changed hands under the hammer, or privately afterwards. Store—The favorable weather has caused this class of sheep to be more sought after. Good crossbredß, for turnip feeding, and hoggets are in fair demand. Sheepskins and "Wool—On Wednesday last, at our usual fortnightly sale, there was a fair attendance of. the trade, and prices were for some classes of skins slightly better. Our sales privately and by auction were 1270, which realised as follows—Best factory crossbreds, 5s 9d to 6s; second, 5s 6d ; butchers', 5s to 5s 7d ; second quality, 4s to 4s lOd; merinos, 3s 6d to 4s 3d; country skins from Is 6d up to 5s 4d, according to size and quality. Wool: Four bales trimmings, 4f d to sd; 3 bales scoured locks and pieces, to Hid per lb. Hides—Weak market, and prices have a downward tendency. In the interests of our clients w© are holding over our stocks. Fat—All on hand was cleared at late quotations.
ENGLISH MARKETS.
London July 25. Five hundred bales of New Zealand hemp have been sold slowly at easier rates. July 26. Australian wheat, ex store, 89s 6d : New Zealand ditto long berried ex store, 39a; the market is firmer. Copper, £4l; quiet. Tin, £9o los. No. 1 best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 44s 9d. Sugar, German beet, 21s; depressed, owing to " bearing " operations on tha continental markets. Java, ditto, 235, The tallow market id firm. Best mutton, 27s 6d; best beef, 26s 6d. Ox hides, 3fd to 3|d per lb. New Zealand hemp, £2815s to £29.
