THE KAIWARRA MURDER.
"Wellington, July 26. Twenty-five additional petitions re Chemis have been received, giving 6740 names. One hundred and twenty lists'bare" yet'to be returned, and it is fully expected that the estimate of 12,000" signatures will be exceeded. Colonel Hume, * in company with Detective Kirby, was engaged this morning in making searching ioquiries in Kaiwarra and the surrounding districts, with reference to the statements made as to the condemned man's innocence. This afternoon they were continuing their investigations in town. The result of the enquiries will not be made public until after they have been considered by the Government. July 27. Mr Jellicoe has obtained the consent of the Government to a private interview with the convict Chemis. The Governor referred him to the Ministers and the Premier eventually granted the application. Mr Jellicoe states that he has twenty affidavits of fresh evidence' in the direction tending to exculpate Chemis.
