ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, July 19. Lennox, the aeronaut,who ascended in a balloon with the intention of descending by means of a parachute, has 'been killed at Manchester. The balloon collapsed and ho fell from a great height. The Jockey Club has warned Wood and McLeay off the Newmarket course and withdrawn the license from Sherrard, the trainer.
An inquest has begun on the body of the woman recently billed in t&hitecbapel, The body has not been identified, “ Jack the Ripper” made an endeavour to repeat bia crime at Walworth, but was unsuccessful. Sydney, July 18. In connection with the allegations of Dr Germont and M. Loire that letters addressed to them bad been tampered with by the Government, the French Consul has informed Sir Henry Parkes, the Premier, that he is satisfied that nothing dishonorable took place, He also states that M. Pasteur had expressed displeasure at the action of Dr Gerraont and M. Loire in the matter. Sailed—Mararoa, for Auckland. Morrison, the man who shot Constable Sutherland, has been condemned to death. The jury recommended him to mercy on the ground that ho only intended to maim his victim, but the learned judge declined to accept the recommendation. Groat damage has been done by the floods in the Clarence district, and it is feared that a portion of the town of Grafton will be swept away.
