THE KAIWARRA MURDER.
Wellington, July 19. Government have not taken Chemis’ case into consideration, as they are waiting for the Judge’s formal report, and the evidence which Mr Jellicoe is said to be preparing. The petition in favor of the reprieve of Louie Chemis is being numerously signed. The prime movers have written to the Minister of Justice to name a date when it can be handed in, also if he will allow a deputation to present it to His Excellency direct. Last evening Mr Jellicoe visited the Terrace Gaol, and held a lengthened conversation with the prisoner, but the utterances of each were taken down in shorthand on behalf of the Goyernment by Mr H, Gore, private secretary to the Minister of Lands. Ihe gaoler (Mr Garvey) was present during the interview. A copy of the transcription has been forwarded to Mr Jellicoe, who is now engaged in looking up evidence on behalf of the prisoner. Mr Jellicoe has written a warm letter to the Minister of Justice, protesting against the course adopted, in a Government shorthand reporter being present at the interview, and asking for a private interview with prisoner.
