George "White, late superintendent of the Nelson Lunatic Asylum has been committed for trial for embezzling money received by hin for the maintenance of patients. It is reported that Ts Eooti intends to proceed to Auckland shortly in regard to his application to the Supreme Court that the order calling upon him to find sureties of the peace be set aside. The Minister of Lands states that he has received letters from the West Coast of the North Island, pointing out that bush falling is almost a standstill in consequence of all the men being engaged at the fiaz mills. It is almost impossible' to get men for bush falling. The Otago Education Board refused to receive a deputation of schoolmasters re future appointments, and called on Mr White, head' master of the Normal School, for an explanation of his speech before the Educational Institute. The Premier promised a deputation, representing, Friendly Sooieties, that that he would try and get a Bill passed this session freeing halls belonging to lodges, and used for lodge;purposes, from local and general rates, Jo Sewie, a Chinese, was charged at Riverton on Wednesday with rape on a r half-bredfChinese girl of six years at Round Hill. Accused was remanded and admitted to bail. The members of the Auckland branch of the Hibernian society have resolved to take part in the reception to the Irish delegates j and contribute £SO to the Irish evicted tenants fund, the money to be'raised ! by a levy on members.
