A number of colonial-born young men, sympathisers with Home Rule, are taking steps to welcome the Irish delegates to Auckland, An open verdict was returned at the enquiry into the recent fire at Mrs Walker’s millinery establishment, Wellington. Charles Stewart, a well-known resident, formerly manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Dunedin, was found drowned in a lagoon near Wharf Hotel, Dunedin. Mr Bright has declined to address a meeting in iavonr of Home Rule, owing to tbe fact that his stay in Auckland is brief. He says that he approves of Horae Rale and the Irish delegates.
Some consternation has been caused by the natives at Waitahnna, near Whatawhata, Auckland, owing to the exhuming of the body of a native recently bailed there. It is not known bow the remains were disinterred, and several natives have left the settlement, On Saturday at Round Hill, Southland, two men, named Lee and Chester, were discussing the qualities of revolvers. Lee took one from a shelf and handed it to Chester to examine, Chester, who was standing at Lee’s right side, not being aware that the weapon was loaded pulled the trigger, with the result that the bullet just grazed the clothing over Lee’s breast and lodged in the fleshy part of bis left arm. At Dunedin on Monday, John Davidson, master of the Janet Ramsay, and Charles Willianison and Wm, Cramer, owners, were fined £6 10s for each seal killed at the Aucklands daring the close season, . Sir R. Stout’s application for exemption of forfeiture of M*e vessel, caused by the conviction,,,will receive the consideration of the magistrate. The difficulty between the Grey Yalley Coal Company : and the coal miners is still unsettled. At a meeting on Saturday, evening, the miners resolved to adhere to their demand for 2s lOd per ton off theishovel, or 4s screened. The company offer 2s 2£d. Various sums are coming in, in aid of the miners out of work, the total being £lO5 so far. At a meeting of the Masonic Union at Dunedin it was resolved that it is desirable before any delegates are appointed to consider the propriety of establishing a United Grand Lodge in New Zealand, that the basis of the proposed Grand Lodge, should be published and fully discussed. A committee was appointed to frame a basis of union for the Grand Lodge, and it was decided to invite the Wellington executive to submit their proposed basis.
