TIMARU HA BBOR-BOARD.
A special and ordinary meeting of this board was held on Wednesday morning. Present Messrs Acton (chairman), Morris, Wilson, Teschemaker, Grey, Ross, and Manchester, and Captains Sutter and Woollcombe. Co despondence was read' from the Belfast Rope Company, and MeEwan and Co.,r«? supply of materials Ordered. It wak decided to have the standards supporting the WenKam lamps on the main wharf altered, as suggested by the Railway Department. As at present placed they are considered dangerous to the shufiters and drivers. An offer from Messrs Palliser and Jones to sell the concrete shed, engine shed, etc., on the beach for £l2O was declined. The Marine Department wrote drawing attention to the fact that the question of responsibility of a vessel towing and the vessel towed by it seemed , to be settled by the 1 case “ Flying Serpent ” and “ Niobe,” where it was laid down th at udder an ordinary contract of towage the vessel in tow has control over the tug, and is therefore liable for the wrongful acts of the latter, unless they are done so suddenly as to prevent the vessel in tow from controlling them.—Members said in this case the board should not be held liable for the mishap to the Lyttelton. —On looking up the by-laws it was found that the decision was incorporated in Section 80. " The wharfage receipts for the month were stated to amount to £47414s 6d. The harbourmaster reported the arrival during June, of 24 s steam and 4 sailing vessels, aggregating 11,361 tons, and the departure of 24 steam and 3 sailing vessels, of 11,298 tons. The weather during the month was fine. Iq his report the engineer said the - - tons. - of spoil J in ‘l4Maysr:since last meeting. The North Mole contract was proceeding satisfactorily.v The bell for the bell-buoy had arrived.' The standing committee had agreed with the suggestion tba,t. steps for fishing boats should bd, constructed besidethe North Mole, and later on a shingle beach should be laid beside the old boat shed at the Nortk/Molel; coat £3O to £4O. —The last suggestion was referred to the standing committee. Accounts amounting to £987 lie 5d were passed for payment. Mr Darling cabled out a tender for tbe new tug; the price being £10,950 • —£99so.for'building; and £IOOO for bringing out, and on the motion of Captainouiter, seconded by Mr M orris, the same was accepted. Mr Gray strongly protested against the expense, holding the present tug was quite powerful enough. Mr Manchester also opposed the proposal. Other members-considered a new tug a necessity. The meeting then terminated.
