GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs F. B. FI at man (chairman), W. DeKenzy, W. U. Slack, and J. Kelland..; . MXNXJTSS. Tbe minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. TEITDEM. _ Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows: No. 289—Grubbing gorso and cutting fences at reserves, Woodbury district; B. Murphy, £9 10s; P. Paul, £7 7s 6d (accepted). No. 299—Grubbing gorse and cutting fences, Geraldine district: J. Griadal, £8 6s (informal); W. Fly, £4lss ;W. Gaiger, £4l9s (accepted). No. 211—Cuttings and stop banks near Hew eon’s, Orari Gorge Road : M. Lawlor, £lB 7e 6d (accepted). No. 292 Formation, cuttings, and culverts, Stephenson's Road, Jones’s Golly, Opihi; M, Lawlor, £44 7s 6d ;/. Fifield, £3915s (accepted). COREESrONDEKCB. Correspondence was read and dealt with u follows From Mr Gregan, stating that a road had been given by him some 14 years ago leading ..to the footbridge near bis property, but had not been placed on the map. He asked for it to be so placed.— Le'ter to be scut to Mr J. H. Baker. From Mr J. Graenall, offering the sum of £1 for lease of the sbinglo reserve No. I near his property for one year.— Accepted, subject to the board taking shingle at any lime required. From Mr Allan Macdonald, asking the board to let the gravel reserve near Wood/bury, and offering 10a per annum for the -Asame.—-It was decided, as tha reserve was planted' with trees, not to admit steck te the same. From Mr J. Campbell, Woodbury, asking permission to cut a drain alongside his own fenpe, so as to ran the water along the issue, instead r ,pf allowing it to run off the road on to His land. —Overseer to report.' From Mr A. White, asking the Board to instruct Mr Lewis to remove a fence erected by tbe latter across the road near the former’s property. —Mr Lewis not haying obtained leave from tbs Board, it was decided to ask him to remove the fence. From,Mr Howsy, urging the Board to push oh the survey and transfer of the section to be exchanged.—Flan to be sent te Mr Howey for signature. From Messrs C. W. Fisher and Co., Christchurch, enclosing quotations for drain pipes. ‘ From Mr Geo. King, stating that ha was about to fence his section at Rhubarb Fiat, and as there was a quantity of scrub and manuka on the line of road be should have to fence, he offered to give the sum of 30s for tbe scrub and firewood on the road. —The offer was accepted. From Mr J. G. Brown, re a letter from the Geraldine Town Board, with regord to the watbr-raca being constructed by the latter, stating that the race was to be cot along the road and fenced', and be would thus be cut off from bis section and from the river.—The letter was referred to the Town Board; asking to have Mr Brown’s interests considered.
From, Mr I. Grant, resigning bis position as A member of the Board, owing to his having parted with all bis interest in the district.—The resigaation was accepted ; the vacancy to be filled. A circular was read from the proprietor of Cobar Station, N.S.W., euggssting a remedy for the rabbit pest,—Head. From, the Paymastei-General, sdyising the Board of the sum of £125 having been remitted to their credit as payment of subsidy under tbe Local Bodies finance and Powers Act.
from the Auditor-General, covering certificated copy of balance-sheet to March Slat, 1889. An exhibition circular, asking for the return of subscription lists was read. The clerk was instructed to reply that do aubsciptions had been received. OVXKSBXR S SEP®RT. The overseer's report was read and dealt with as follows “ I have the honor to report for the nformation of the board as under “The works in hand have made fair progress the month. The protective works below the Orari Bridge have been completed, and the willows set up. “Foster’s Application—As the road would be of little service to anyone but Mr Foster, 1 should advise the board to let him have the scrub and firewood on the road for making the track to his bush, as the road ends there,—(lt was decided to adopt the overseer’s suggestion.) “ Wells’ App ioation—This road (40 chains in length) has been formed some years ago but not shingled. To repair this road, and place a tight ceab of shingle on it, would coat, say, £—. The gravel would have, to be - obtained from Mr Slack’s freehold. There are no shingle in this district. In reference to the gates on this road, if left in position they would require to be rehung. However, Mr Sleek informs me that he intends
to remove them and fence the road line, —fit was decided, ic view of Mr Slack’s decision, to allow the matter to stand oyer for the present.) “Henderson’* Application—lhaie visited this road aince last meeting and called tenders for making a passable track a* far as Henderson’s house (distance 40 chains.) The ground is very rough and much cut up by intersecting gullies requiring a large number of pipe culverts. “Reserve at Orari Village Settlem«nt —In reference to tbo exchange with MrHowcy for a portion of this rrssrve, he is anxious to have it completed so that the land can bs fenced in at an early date. “ I have seen Mr Verral, the tenant, and he agrees to the board’s proposals. “Orarißeserve—As the land in the riverbed has been purchased, and is being fenced off, 1 had to form a fresh track on the bne of road to keep it open for traffic.
“Poisoned ff heat—There has been sgood demand for poisoned grain lately. I issued the stock in hand mid have ordered a fresh supply. From enquiries made from those to whom it was issued I learn that it is fairJy effective in killing the birds.
“ Pipes—A fresh stock of drain pipes is required. “ W. Shier*, “Clerk and Overseer.” CORSE UPON ROADS,
The clerk reported the name* of those persons who had not complied with the notifies sent them ri clearing gorse from the roads.
Membsrs wore in fayor of issuing summonses at once, but the clerk said that owing to the amount of work to be done this month in making out the voting Hats and conducting the election tbsre would be very little time available for taking action this month.
In coossqaence of the clerk’s statement the following resolution was passed—That all who have bad notices to clear gorse off the roads opposite their properties and hays not complied with the same be summoned next meeting.’’
THE VALUATION ROLL. A considerable amount of dissatisfaction waa expressed at the manner in which the valuation roll was made out; tbe name of both owner and occupier was placed in the index,which made it very troublesome to make nut the voting lists, Tha following resolution was finally passed—“ That the Property Tax Commissioner's attention be drawn to the unsatisfactory manner in which the valuation roll has been compiled, and would suggest that the following alterations be made in compiling the roll in future years : (1) That tbe occupier’s name only should be entered in the index, aud owner’s name in tbe column for owners ; (2) that the names be entered alphabetically on tbe roll; (3) that one person's property abould not be entered in several places, but only in one place consecutively.'’ DEPUTATIONS. Mr Postlethwaits waited on the board with regard to the gorse on his frontage on the back road from the Orari bridge to the Orari railway station. He asked the board to have the stones picked off. He had let four contracts for grubbing the gorse upon this read, but they had always been thrown up. On the last occasion he gave 4s per chain, and also gave the contractors the privilege of getting their tods sharpened at his blacksmith's shop, but after doing four chains the contract was thrown up. The stones were thrown there by the board’s men.—lt was decided to cell tenders for picking the stones off the road. —Mr Postlethnaite also offered to exchange section No. 21295 for reserve No. 1064, he paying all costs of the transfer, &c.—Agreed to. —He also offered the usual rental of £1 per annum for the shingle reserve near the corner his proper ty.—Accepted, Mr Cochrane asked for a few pipes to be put down at tbe approach leading into his section, —The overseer, being asked, explained that pipes had been supplied for this spot some four or five times, and always broken. He also explained that pipes for such purposes had been supplied to a great many ratepayers, but they would not take tbe trouble to keep them sufficiently covered to prevent their being broken. Members were decidedly of opinion that the board eould not see their way clear to supply them again.—lt was decided to cart a few loads of shingle into the spot. Mr McShane waited on the board and asked for some compensation for the shingle taken from.the reserve leased by him from the Beard of Education. It was decided to givs him £1 per year for the right to take what shingle was required. Mr J. Gregan waited on the board in support of bis letter read earlier in the day. He wished to have tbe road placed on the Government maps. It had been surveyed some years ago and the beard bad spent a considerable amount of money on the same, but it had never been placed upon the maps. The board informed Mr Gregan that they would enquire, and if the road existed have the same placed upon the maps. SMALL USDS 1 QIISTION.
On the question of tbe small birds’ nuisance, it was decided to continue the plan at present m force, namely, to purchase poisoned grain, and sell it to the ratepayers at Is for 101 b.
JFINANCIAI. Accounts amounting to £lO6 10s Id were passed fer payment. Moved by Mr Welland, seconded by Mr Deßarzy, and carried —“ That the fixed deposit No. 206130, £4OOO, lodged with the Bjnk of New Zealand, bo re-deposilad for 12 months, interest t® be placed to current account with Bank New South Wales.”
Moved by Mr Kellsnd, seconded by Mr Deßenzy, and carried—“ That deposit No. 257803, for £250, falling due on July 21st at the Bank of New ZsaUnd, be placed to current account with the Bank of New Sonth Wales, with interest.” Moved by Mr Kellaud, seconded by Mr Deßenzy, and carried—“ That deposit No. 474, £4250, lying with the Bank New Senth Wales be disposed of as follows : £4OOO on fixed deposit for twelve months, and £250 for six months, interest accrued to be placed to current account. The mooting then terminated. MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. A public meeting et ratepayers was held at three o’clock. There was a very small attendance. The annual balancesheet, which was held over from the annual meeting on account of the auditor not having audited the books, was read as certified to by the Auditor-General,and the same was adopted.
