SALVATION ARMY, TEMUKA.
. The fifth anniversary of the “ storm* ing ” of Temuka by the Salvation Army was celebrated by the holding of special service! and a birthday tea. The opening service of the series took place on Saturday last, when there was a capital attendance at the barracks. After the usual march and introductory ceremony, some excellent addresses were delivered by Major Hammond (Southern Division), Cap* : tain Gunnion (now of Palmerston, but lately jn charge of the Temuka station), and the local officers. A number ©f Army songs were sung with' much spirit, the meeting being one of those termed “ free and easy.” On Sunday morning there'. was early knee drill and the usual parade. These were well attended, and the addresses of the major and other officers were received with much attention. In the afternoon what may be termed a musical meeting took place, Major Hammond and Mrs Captain Bates singing some excellent solos,-'the former accompanying himself with no inconsiderable skill npon
the gmifcar. In the averring the barracks were literally crowded, there being an attendance of between 200 and 300 persons, among whom were visitors from Pleasant Point, Rangitata, and, in fact, all part* of the district. Major Hammond selected a passage from the 3rd chapter of John for the subject of his discourse. His simple eloquence, free as it was from inflation, evidently made a good impression, and the major at all subsequent periods when he spoke was well received. Mrs Bates, Captain the local officers, and visitors nil spoke more or less briefly, reference being frequently made in congratulatory terms to the progress made by the Army during the past fire years and the happy influence it had exercised over a large section of the community. The service, with its subsequent hallelujah meeting was sustained with vigour until about 10 p.m. Last night a tea meeting took place in the Volunteer Hall, The attendance exceeded all expectation, over 200 persons partaking of an excellent tea catered for by Mr T. Barr. After tea there was a parade, followed by a public meeting, a further report of which will appear in next issue.
