Arrived—Ship Taranaki from Port Chalmers (April 4) ; barque Wairaea, from Lyttelton (March 25); ship Barqanj, from Lyttelton (March 10) ; ship Linlithgowshire, from Napier (April 8); barque Mathilda Hennings, from Timaru (March 19); barquenfine Pauls, from Timaru (March 4).
The New South Wales loan of three and a half millions at per cent, with minimum 102, is announced. Holders of N.S.W. stock consider the proposed loan a breach of the pledge given in May that the colony would not go on the money market again at an early dale. The loan is quoted at a premium of 4 per cent.
The Shah of Persia is visiting Her Majesty at Windsor. Sir J. Fergusson, in the House of Commons, stated that it was untrue that England had merely played the part of an umpire during the deliberations of the Samoan conference. The treaty would remain in abeyance until December.
Her Majesty has asked the House of Commons to make provision for Prince Albert Victor and the Princess Louise. Mr Labouchera opposed any grant being made from tbe public revenue for the purpose, pointing out (bat the Earl of Fife’s rent roll was £70,000 per annum. Two thousand persons attended the annual conversazione of the Colonial Institute. Tho marriage of the Princess Louise is fixed for July 27th.

The amount asked for the establishment of the Princess Louise is £3OOO, and for Prince Albert Victor, £IO,OOO, the latter to be increased to £25,000 upon his marriage. It is expected that the Opposition will resist the amount being voted pending the appointment of a committee to inquire into the subject.
The annual cricket match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities was won by the latter in one innings with 105 runs to spare. The Lord Mayor of London has received 500 delegates of the World’s Monday School Convention, Additional letters received by Sir F. de Winton from Mr H. M. Stanley report him to be in a deplorable condition, He is shoeless, and the clothing of bimself and followers is torn absolutely to rags. His hair has turned snow-white. The privations of the party have been something terrible, and large numbers of his men have died from starvation.
In the coarse of aa interview with the Shah of Persia to-day, the Marquis of Salisbury said that England had watched with sympathy , the policy of Persia for developing commerce, and the steps taken to free her subjects from any oppression, He hoped that she would continue to strengthen her resources, and was glad to see that she was preparing alliances which would enable her to maintain a peaceful attitude, and reciprocate the good friendship of England. The Shah nodded assent

The threatened attack on Wady Haifa was made to-day by the Dervishes, wbo were repulsed with great loss, 500 being killed end many wounded. Seventy of the Egyptians who defended the position, and two British officers, were wounded, iho fight extended over 7 miles' of country, and 500 persons were captured by the British troops, under Colonel VV adehouse.

At a mass meeting resolutions denouncing tho members of the Cian-no-Gael Society as assassins were carried. It was also decided that the society was usurping the attributes of Government in decreeing death and in exacting fealty, and was levying war against a nation friendly to America, The meeting demanded that Goveruraont should suppress it. Pitzherbert, who in January last started to walk from Advalo to Charleville, and had not since been beard of, On the bottom of a pannikin found near the body was scratchel the following words Write S.
