Arrived—Ship Taranaki from Port Chalmers (April 4) ; barque Wairaea, from Lyttelton (March 25); ship Barqanj, from Lyttelton (March 10) ; ship Linlithgowshire, from Napier (April 8); barque Mathilda Hennings, from Timaru (March 19); barquenfine Pauls, from Timaru (March 4).

The New South Wales loan of three and a half millions at per cent, with minimum 102, is announced. Holders of N.S.W. stock consider the proposed loan a breach of the pledge given in May that the colony would not go on the money market again at an early dale. The loan is quoted at a premium of 4 per cent.

The Shah of Persia is visiting Her Majesty at Windsor. Sir J. Fergusson, in the House of Commons, stated that it was untrue that England had merely played the part of an umpire during the deliberations of the Samoan conference. The treaty would remain in abeyance until December.

Her Majesty has asked the House of Commons to make provision for Prince Albert Victor and the Princess Louise.
