Princess Louise, eldest daughter of tho Prince of Wales, has been betrothed to the Earl of Fife, Her Majesty the Queen has given her consent tc the betrothal. June 28The tone of the London Press is favorable to the betrothal of Princess Louise and the Earl of Fife. [The Princess Louise Victoria Alexandra Dagmar, the eldest daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, was born on February 20th, 1867. She is consequently in her 23rd year. The Right Hon. Alexander William George Duff, K.T., P.C., sixth Earl of Fife, was born November lOih, 1849, and is con. sequently in his 40th year], A thousand reformed prisoners be-, longing to the Salvation Army, under' leadership of Herbert Booth, were marching in procession along the Strand, when they came in contact with the police. A riot ensued, which ended in several arrests being made after injuries more or or less severe had been inflicted on both sides. The Times says that the French demand for the evacuation of Egypt by England is merely an electoral manoeuvre. The Shah of Persia will arrive on July Ist, and sail up the Thames to the Speaker’s stairs of the House of Commons. There he will disembark and proceed to Bnckingbam Palace. Tbe R.M.S. Rimutaka arrived, all well, at Plymouth yesterday. Her cargo of frozen meat is m splendid condition. Carlotta Patti, sister to Adelina Patti, died to-day. In the cricket match between Lancashire and Surrey counties the Utter were defeated by an innings and 48 runs. The Hierarchy of Ireland are unanimous in expressing regret that Archbishop Walsh’s suggestion for arbitration on the land question was not adopted. In the House of Commons the Eight Hon, Mr Goschen has introduced a Bill providing for tbe withdrawal of all light sovereigns which were issued prior to Her Majesty’s ascension to the throne. The Marquis of Salisbury in the House of Lords this afternoon said that the Government were not in possession of any information as to the rumored rising in Novi Bazar, and therefore he thought that the rumor bad no foundation. The South-Eastern Railway Company intend to introduce a Bill into Parliament to enable the Channel Tunnel scheme to be carried out, notwithstanding the determined opposition to it in tbe previous session. The Glasgow sailors have accepted tbe owners’ terras; bat the strike ot Liverpool is not settled. Mr Gladstone, in an article in the Nineteenth Century, compares the state of Ireland to the Reign of Terror during the French revolution. He avers that British tyranny, cruelty, and illegality, surpass even the conduct of the French leaders during that sanguinary period. A forty-pound gun burst at Sheeruess, and injured three bystanders, Lord Mayor Whitehead *gave a banquet to several English Judges. In the course of a speech during the evening the host referred to the impartiality of British Judges, and instanced the cases of Captain Woodward and the Duke of Cambridge, in both of which cases the law bad been fearlessly enforced. During the performance at the Alhambra last evening the dress of one of the dancers caught fire, and before it was extinguished the unfortunate girl was severely burned. A panic took place among the audience, and several persons received severe but not fatal injuries. The Rev. F. J. Cherasse succeeds the Rev. Mr Girdlegtone, of Oxford, and
therefore it is improbable that be would accept the vacant See of Sydney, Meadows, the Australian light weight, who is now in America, has issued a challenge to fight anyone in the world for the light weight championship. Berlin, June 28. The Emperor of Germany and the Czar will meet at Kiel in August, Rome, June 29. In the Senate to-day Signor Crispi, the Premier, said that the Vatican ought to recognise that the temporal power of the Pope had perished for ever, instead ! of hoping for the intervention of foreign powers. Sofia, June 27. The rising at Novi’Bazar, Bosnia, is increasing, and. many Servian residents in that country have left for this city. Constantinople, June 28. In consequence of the commotion at Novi Bazar, Turkish troops have been despatched thither, Cairo, June 29. Eight thousand Dervishes are hastening to Wady Haifa, and in consequence strong reinforcements are being despatched, Zanzibar, June 28. All the missing steamers of Captain Wissmann’s expedition have turned up safely. Ottawa, June 28. The Premier of Canada, in the course of a speech, let fall au observation that although a century had elapsed since the conquest of the country by England, the inhabitants of Quebec were still Frenchmen at heart, and not colonists. New York, June 28. The police have received information that a grand jury, composed of leading members of the Clan-na-Gael Society, is conducting a secret inquiry into a charge against a member of revealing the names of the procedure committee of seven. Agitation has been set on foot to recall Patrick Egan from his position as American Minister to Chili, on the ground of his complicity in the proceedings of the Clan-na-Gael. AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Melbourne, June 2d. The following have been appointed to act as "Victorian Commissioners at tbe Dunedin Exhibition Messrs Langridge, M.P. (Chairman), Turner (President of the Chamber of Commerce), Jacobs (President of the Chamber of Manufacturers), Barrett (President of the Trade Council), Aldermen Stawart and Meakin. Tbe Government will devote £4OOO to expenses of tbe Commission. The Melbourne Harbor Trust have chartered the Otago hopper dredge for twelve months for £6OOO. June 29. Arrived—Hanroto, Negotiations are proceeding between the Government, the Presbyterians, and the Union Company for the extension of the New Hebrides steam service. Mr Kerr’s timber yards wore destroyed by fire Ibis evening. The damage is estimated at £20,000, and there is no insurance. Sydney, June 28. A magnificent diamond has been found near Inverell, a flourishing township on the Mclntyre River, 383 miles north of Sydney. It is a perfect octohedron, weighing 8 carats. June 29. H.M.S, Orlando sailed for New Zealand last night. The owner of the schooner Colonist declares that the vessel sailed on a legitimate cruise, and he asserts that Weaver’s yarn of a treasure island in the Pacific was a pure fabrication. The Australian Champion Coursing Stakes was won by Flageolet, the runner up being Befi Hind. * Tbe revenue for the financial year just ended amounts to £8,674,700, being an increase of £1,067,000. The principal increases are in Customs £526,000, and Railways £372,000. Newcastle, June 29. The prospects of recovering the bodies of the imprisoned miners are remote, the mine is a wreck and the rescue party are working in great peril. Adelaide, June 29. The State Bank Commission have reported ag'ainst the establishment of a mint bank and suggest that the Government should issue paper currency notes of values from 5s to £lO.
