FLOODS US' THE NORTH ISLAND.
Auckland, July 28. The recent heavy rain has had a disastrous effect in the Kaipara district and landslips have occurred. The train leaving Helensville for Kaukapakapa to-day had to return, and on the journey to Auckland it was found when the train reached the Kaipara bridge that the boom had been carried away by the fresh, and about six or seven hundred logs had been borne down on the railway bridge, which is in some danger because of the extra weight upon it.. The river was considerably swollen. The next obstruction met with was a slip tlat had taken place on a cutting about Woodhill. The train had to stop while a party of platelayers rearranged the rails, which had been lifted out of place with the sleepers. On each side was a scene of devastation, hundreds of acres of land, both pasture and bush, being totally under water, trees rooted up and fences destroyed. A new flax mill erected near Rewiti was about six feet under water. At Waitakerei it was found that a heavy landslip had occurred at th® mouth of the tunnel, where 200 tons of earth had beep displaced. The entrance of the tunnel was almost entirely closed. The train could not proceed further, and the passengers bad to walk over the ranges and go into a train on the other side. The railway authorities have taken steps to clear the line.
