The Mails at Winchester. —Mr Rhodes is to ask the Government to-day whether arrangements will be made for the express trains picking up mail bags at Winchester. SooiiL Tea and Gathering. — A social ton and gathering in connection with St. Saviour’s church, will be held in the Oddfellows’ Dal', Temuka, on Thursday, the 11th July. Strong efforts are being made to make the gathering a most enjoyobla one, Loans for Waterworks.— lu our advertising columns it is announced that the Geraldine County Council intend to borrow the sums of £I2OO and £BOO for the purpose of constructing irrigation works in the Orari-Walhi and Geraldine Flat water-supply districts. ’Frisco Mail Service, —ln the estimates laid on the table of (he House £19,000, instead of £24,000, has been set down as a subsidy to the San Francisco mail service. The Government are evidently determined to assist the Californian farmers to undersell New ZcaLd producers.

Not Soeiptubali.—Someone in Osmaru has written under the nom de plume of “ Simplicity ” to the editor of the papers complaining that two English Churches in London discountenance marriage during the season of Lent. On account of this he seems to be in a terrible state of mind. Superstition, folly, rubbish —all the epithets his evidently limited vocabulary can supply—he applies to it, because there is no Scriptural authority for discountenancing marriage during the Lenten season. It is, he says, such superstitions as these make Freethinkers, and he continues to rave m a terrible state oyer this point. Is it not a pity that men are still so monomaniaoal as to get into a state of excitement over such a trifling matter, moreover when it has occurred 16,000 miles away f N.Z. Exhibition. A cablegram from Melbourne says :—‘‘A Gazette contaiaing the appointment of the Tictonan Royal Commission to the New Zealand Exhibition will be issued in a day or so. It is asserted that the principal reasons which actuated the Government in accepting the New Zealand Exhibition was to foster the friendly feeling which always existed between the two colonies, and also to practically reciprocate the liberal msaner in which New Zealand participated at the lest two Melbourne Exhibitions.”—The Government of Npw, South Wales have telegraphed for 8000 ft of space for mineral exhibits alone from that colony. The matter of further representation is still undep consideration. The Anglo-Australian collection of pictures, by British artists, now in Sydney, has been definitely secured for the art gallery.—Although no agent has been appointed in the United States, telegraphic applications for space Imye been received* The to which ocher countries are taking space exceeds .expectations.

An EaBIT SEPARirXON.r-4- oawlymarriod cauplo were l he source of considerable amusement at the Timaru railway station the other day. They hud just had the knot tied, and made their way to the raiitvay station, with the intention of proceeding hy train to Fairlie Creek. The husband escorted his flushing bride into a carriage, add then returned to the platform to bid good-bye to some friends who were seeing the couple off. While engaged in so doing ho forgot that sf time and trains wait for no one/' and only realised the fact when be saw the train slowly moving away from the platform. He made a rush for the train and his bride, but the guard —a married man, by the way—did not sympathise with him, or if he did ho placed duty before his feelings, and barred his progress, apd on the platform he had to remain, while his wife was carried away from him. Both found relief in a good of tears. The separation was of short duration, however, as the bride left the train at the Wushdyko, where she was soon rejoined by her slothful spouse, and doubtless no ham was done by the contra tumps.

Stop My Papbe.—A contemporary says; “ Nothing makes a man so wild as to see that though he stopped his paper the proprietor of it is getting rich without him. Ho stopped his paper believing it would rum the proprietor, and it riles him to find the mm he wanted to crush still flourishing. He does not know that probably the proprietor never knew whether he stopped his paper or not. Stopping and putting on papers is so common a thing that the duty devolves on the junior member of tho staff, and he only knows it.” Football. —The following are the teams selected to play in the trial match at Timaru on Saturday next;—Blues (Probables) — Backs: Maclean, Perry, Masintosh, Shallard, Lawronson, and Hart; forwards ; Matheson, Goodali, Stokes, Studholme, A. and D. The coating disappears upon cooking. The inventors claim that meat oan be preserved for weeks and months at a cost of one-fifth of a penny per lb. Whether the process is suitable for exporting meal has not yet been tested. Externally the meat shows a slight shrinkage, but when out is fresh and juioy. Experiments so far have been successful. The plastering, etc, would have been further, advanced had it not been for tho late fros*. The whole of the repairs mentioned would ba done. On this assurance tho renewal was granted and the meeting terminated.

A Steax Boat. —The Government on Tuesday received a message from Mongonui stating that a whaleboat had been found in Tom Bowling Bay, near North Cape, containing carpenters’ tools, life buoys, and provisions. The boat bears tha narati of H.M.S. Dart. It ,is feared some accident may have happened to her during the recent rough weaiber. Maslin, W.0.T., occupied the chair, and gave some interesting particulars with regard to the progress of the Band of Hope, which he said was in a moat flourishing condition. He regretted, however, that more interest was not taken in the Good • Templar Lodge. Numbers of persons joined the lodge, and, although they did not break their pledge, still they did not attend the lodge meetings. He considered it was their duty to attend the
