A man named Lawrence Drew has been fined £5 at Auckland for smuggling 61b of tobacco. John Edgar, aged nearly two years, wqs burnt to death on Saturday at Abbotsford, near Dunedin. In Christchurch on Monday a lad named P. Pavel, while handling a pistol, accidentally shot himself in the thigh. The bullet went almost through the limb. A young man, giving his name as Stewart or Taylor, obtained goods of the value of £lO 17s 6d from a watchmaker’s assistant at Oamaru (a young man) and tendered in payment two printed receipts for money paid, looking very much like cheques. He represented these to be worth £1712s 6d, and after getting the change departed. On the discovery being made that the ‘‘ cheques ” had no value, the police were informed, but up to the present time they have not caught the swindler. John W. Crabtree, the convict who gained some notoriety by his prison* breaking exploits about two years ago, and who was transferred to Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, is about to be released, Bis Excellency the Governor having remitted the remainder of his sentence. A short time back Grabtree’s mind gave way, and he was confined in the Avondale Asylum. The remainder of the sentence now being remitted, Crabtree will be handed over to the care of his parents, who reside in Auckland and purpose taking him out of the colony, Crabtree was undergoing a sentence of 16 years for horse stealing and prison breaking.
