FLOODS IN VICTORIA.

Melbourne, June 19. There has been a great deal of rain in many of the country districts, and floods have prevailed largely. In Melbourne also on Eriday last a severe gale was felt, which drove the harbor steamer Longsdale ashore from her moorings in the- bay, and gave some of the home ships at the pier an anxious time. The most serious accident reported is from the neighborhood of Sandhurst, by which two young ladies were drowned. A buggy and pair of horses conveying Eather Lawler, of Sandhurst, Miss Galvin, the Roman Catholic school teacher at Barnedown, Miss Powell, of Barnedown, and a boy named Eourke set out from Elmore at about 4 o’clock in the morning, and and on reaching the Mount Pleasant creek, near old Eunnymede, they missed the bridge in the darkness and plunged into the stream. The creek was swollen with the flood water from the water sheds of Mount Pleasant, Mount Camel, and Mount Ida, the buggy was capsized and the occupants thrown into the stream. The two young ladies were drowned, but Eather Lawler and the lad were saved. After clinging to a sapling for several hours they were discovered by a boy employed on Mr Yabland’s farm, and. were rescued by means of ropes. Miss Galvin’s mother resides in McCrae’s street, Sandhurst, and she had a fit on hearing of the disaster. Eather Lawler was- proceeding to Muskerly to see a Mr StarJrey who was seriously ill, when the accident occurred. The bodies of the two ladies have since been recovered.
