Mr Rhodes at Fairlib Creek.— Mr Rhodes addressed a well-attended meeting of his constituents at Fairlie Creek on Saturday evening, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence on the motion of Mr Rutherford, seconded by Mr Gillingham. Zbalandia Skating Rink, Temuka;— The popularity of tbia rink appears to be oh the increase, and quite a number of first-rate skaters are to be seen on wheels; every night the rink is open. On Tuesday; evening the attendance was particularly good. A carnival will shortly be held. Selling Property for Unpaid Rates. -On Saturday last a twe-roomed cottage and quarter-acre section at Waimate were sold by auciion by order of the Waimate Borough Council to recover unpaid rate* amounting lo £4. The lot realised £l3 10s. Other properties are to be similarly treated. Promotion.—Mr John Russell, who for several years has filled the position of postman and telegraphist in Tetnuka, has been promoted to a position in the Oamarn te'egraph office Mr Russell performed his duty whilst in Temnka very efficiently, and wo wtsu him success in hie new sphere of action.
Death oe Betrayer.-— Betrsyer, the well-known racehorse, and who hie recently been standing at the stud in the Temuka district, wag killed bn Thursday last through getting bogged in a creak on the farm of Messrs Matthews and Trezisa. The horse was a very valuable animal, and his owner, Mr 0. Matthews, therefore suffers a severe lots. Alteration in Train Arrangements.— A further alteration of the railway timetable, of importance to residents iq this district,appears in our advertising columns, The afternoon train from Timaru to Orari will start at 3.5 pin. on and after the 24th inst. Tlie train will ba duo from Washdyke at 3; 17, Temuka at 3.47, Winchester at 4.2, arriving at Orari at 4.16, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays running on to Raogitata at 4.17. Preserving Eggs.— Mr Walter Blake, of Riccarton, a farmer well known in Canterbury as a thoroughly reliable informant, recently showed to che Lyttelton Times a few eggs which ho had kept in a solution of brine and other ingredients for over over nine months. On testing them they, were found to be quite sound, sweet, and good, and were not in the least degree tainted or discolored. Mr Blake has used bis solution regularly every year during a period of 20 years, and has never had occasion to waste a single egg, as the plan adopted has always preserved them effectively.
Memorial to ihh late Father Damien. —The Prince of Wales, in addressing a large meeting of nobility and influential gentlemen at Marlborough House, London, on Saturday, stated that there were a Quarter of a million lepers in India, and he added that the disease was increasing both in Africa and Australia. He said that at the present time a leper was engaged in the London meat market. The Archbishop of Canterbury and Cardinal Manning, who are members ef the Damien Memorial Committee, also addressed the meeting. The proposal for the establishment of a leper ward in Loudon and a hospital .at Molokai was approved.
The Lath Mr Irving Bishof.— News by the mail steamer at Albany states that the physicians -justify the autopsy of Irving Bishop’s body by the csrtainty that he was dead, and the scientific interest taken in such an extraordinary brain as the thought reader’s was supposed to be. Specialists are.of opinion that Bishop was probably at the time quite dead, but declare it passes medical power to declare with certainty until decomposition sets in. Despite the precautions that Bishop had taken to prevent dissection of his body, the extreme haste of the doctors to get hold of bis brain while it was yet warm defeated all bis care. . The operation was performed before his relatives knew that he was supposed to be dead. Alleged Larceny,— At the K.M. Court, Timaru, yesterday, Mrs Catherine Newey was charged with stealing a watch and chain, valued at £l6, from Mrs A. : Edwards on Friday evening. Prom the evidence given it appeared that; prosecutrix and accused were friands, and the latter went to pay the former a visit on the date mentioned. The watch and chain were hanging on a naif in the prosecutrix’s bedroom, and accused took them she averred for a lark. 1 ' On a detective visiting her bouse on Saturday morning she at onee acknowledged taking the articles. The case was remanded until Friday, to give the accused an epportumty of calling a witness whom she alleges she told on going heme on Friday night that she had taken the natch and chain for a lark.
The WsiXfllK.— During Tuesday night tha very severs frosts experienced for a few days previously gave place to a slight fall of snow, nnd all day yesterday the weather was moist and threatening. The frost during the previous week was the sharpest experienced for years. On Saturday night there were 12 degrees of frost, and it continued to freeze in the shade all day on Sunday. At 12 o’clpck on Sunday the thermometer at 48 in a room in the TemDKa' Leader office.' We took it ®ut and hung it on the wall on the sunny side of the office, and in leas than it quarter of an hour it rose to 92. Wo give this as a fact which came under our own notice. The thermometer was perfectly correct, too, because in a very short time after it got into the shade it fell down to 48 again. At 3 o’clock the sanm afternoon there were twdiincbes ofice ori'fche basin of a fountain at the' resfdehce of ‘Mr Job Brown,''
