CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE.

The Corn Exchange reports for the week ending Eriday evening, the 14th With the drug and downward tendency in the Sydney wheat market it cannot be hoped to see any improvement locally for some time to come. The large arrivals from ’Frisco have a very decided effect on the markets,

and until orders are completed we cannot hope for any improvement on this side. Small quantities have been shipped to London, but the outlook js anything but bright for shippers, in spite of the freights. Oats are firm, but business is restricted on account of holders asking extreme values. Barley is dull with but few buyers. Potatoes are in active demand, and unless farmers are prepared to deliver at an early date out of pit prices must be fully maintained. It is, however, generally admitted that the large proportion of the year’s growth have found their way into p ; ts. Prime heavy cocksfoot has a fair demand for London shipments. Dairy produce is quiet. Orders from Australia are comparatively nil. Freight accommodation for Sydney is keeping pace with the requirements, and that for London is ample for all demands at very reasonable rates. The quantity of grain now coming forward is very limited, hut the potatoes during the past fortnight have been very considerable. The following are our week’s quotations: — Wheat Prime tuscan, 8s 8d to 3s 9d; hunters and pearl, 3s 4d to 3s sd; whole chick, 3s to 3s Id; broken, 2s 6d to 2s 9d.
