Here, however, its progress was stayed by the fire brigade, but considerable damage was dons to tire two rooms, and the flooring and ceiling were considerably charred, A tremendous body of water was ponred into the building, and the papers not destroyed by fire were saturated. The water found its way down to the basement, and a iarge quantity of Johnston nnd Company's stock w»s injured. A largo number of valuable law reports and books were destroyed ,or damaged.
