London, May 29. w At the inquest held on the body of J James Maybrick, evidence was adduced that his wife had contracted improper - relations with another man, and that Maybrick’s medicine had been poisoned. St. Petersburg, May 80. < The Russian crusier Majestic is missing. She left Monts Video in March, and not having been heard of since, it is feared she has been lost with all hands on board. Melbourne, May 29. Doctor Figg, arrested last month on a charge of performing an illegal operation at Williamstown, has been acquitted. * May 30. At a ball at Uluphua West last night two of the party named Fitz- , patrick and Richardson quarrelled, and a fight ensued. During the fight Fitzpatrick fell dead. Auckland, May 80. The premises of Dolock, purveyor of fancy goods at Te Aroha, were burglariously entered last night and £2O worth of jewellery and watches stolen. An entrance was effected through the back window. Christchurch, May 29. A young man named Hugh I Quigley, well known in the Ellesmere district, accidentally shot himself dead ibis morning at about ten o’clock, jde was out shooting on Mr John McOonkey’s cattle run, and it appears had shot a hare with the right hand
barrel, and while loading it again the other went off, the discharge entering just below the heart. The gun is a double barrel muzzleloader, and the left hammer appears to have been at full cock. When discovered, the unfortunate young man’s dogs were Keeping a mob of cattle at bay. The dreadful occurrence was seen »t a distance by a boy, who gave the alarm. Constable Simpson was quickly on the scene. May 30. At Lyttelton to-day, John Neilson, a sailor, was committed for trial for passing a gilded sixpence for half a sovereign at the bar of the Royal Hotel.
Dunedin, May 29. Jessie McFadyen, aged six, died from injuries received through her clothes catching fire. Joseph Hall, of Hawesbury, died suddenly of apoplexy. William Howard, a miner in the Kaitangata coal mine was killed yesterday by the fall of a head of coal which ha and another working at. He leaves a wife and two children. May 30. On Monday last the body of a rabbiter named Baird was found on the Carnck range. He died from exposure. Obetmotjxh, May 30. William Wallace, a miner at Hatter’s, River Yiew, was found killed in his claim. He is supposed to have been dead two days. Blenheim, May 29.
Sergeant-Major Kennedy died suddenly this evening at 9.30. Deceased was an old resident in Marlborough, and connected with the volunteers for a great number of years. He came out with the first regiment that landed in Wellington, over 40 years ago; acted as drill instructor to the militia and volunteers in this district for many years, and was much respected. Inteecaegill, May 29. A six-roomed cottage in Jed street was burned this afternoon. It was owned by Mrs Wilson, and occupied by the Colvin family. The house was insured for £IOO. The furniture was saved.
