The leases of the South Canterbury Runs were submitted to auction in Timsru on Thursday last by Mr J. H. Baker, Commissioner of Crown Lands. The sale was concluded at 1.30 p.m., when Mr Baker returned thanks to those present for their attendance, and remarked that they had had a very good sale. There were 64 runs offered. Of these, ten, having a total upset of £1975, we.e not sold. The aggregate upset of the 54 sold was ; £2O 385 Of these 24 were competed for, with the result that the total rent of these wan raised by £7680. The aggregate rent produced by this sale was therefore £2B 065. The sale produces but few changes of owners of leases in the district, only three runs and part of a fourth changing owners. Mr W. Pestlettiwaite will displace Messrs Smith and Denniatoun at Peel Foreat; Mr G. Rutherford takes Mr Teschemaker’s Otaio run ; Mr Hayes the Waimate run, so locg the property of the Studholme family; and Mr G, Murray part of Haldon. . The following are the advertised conditiona : The tenures are in each case tor two months less than the terms stated. The lands included in the Educational Renerves are liable to be purchased at £2 per acre under the provisions of “ The Canterbury Educational Reserves Sale and Leasing Act, 1876.” The Runs marked t are disposed of with right of resumption, and will be subject to valuation for improvements in the event Government deciding to resume possession after twelve months’ notice, in terms of “The Land Act, 1885.” The said valuation will be payable one month before possession is given, and shall in no case exceed three times the annual rent,, or five times the annnal rent when such rent does not exceed £SO.

J ments existing ob such pares of them as are occupied, under licenses at present he Id as Nos, N 29, N 42, N 92, NlO4, and NIOB, issued under “The Land Act, 1885.’’ The said valuation will be payable one month before possession is given, as provided by section 180, Land Act, 1885, ar.d shall in no esse exceed five times the amount of the annual rental. Six months rent must bo paid at the time of sale, and possession will be given on the 2nd May, 1890. The purchase or removal of any existing fences on the Crown lands offered for license, will be matter of arrangement between (he present license and the purchaser, during the currency cf the present license. No liability is accepted by or on behalf of the Grown iu respect of any such fencing. Where fences form the boundary between Crown laads offered for license and freehold land, the purchaser of such license will be liable to the provisions of any law now or hereafter in force relating to boundary fences.
