A Bill introduced in the House of Lords by the Earl of Meath to qualify women sitting as members of the County Councils, has been rejected by a large majority. Genera! Maitland, Director-General of »tbe Ordnance Department at Woolwich, has been compelled to resign his position, and also bis position as member of the Army and Navy Club. The Edinburgh City Council have finally approved the proposition to confer the freedom of the city on Mr Parnell. by 22 to 16. The freedom of the city will bs conferred on Mr Parnell on July Ist. In the action Greenwood versus Gibbs, the plaintiff claimed damages on account of injury sustained through the conduct of Gibbs, owing to which he was compelled to relinquish the editorship of the St, James' Gazette. Greenwood, in his evidence, asserted that he resisted Gibbs because he had reason to believe that the Gazotte was becoming the organ of Prince Bismarck. Evidence disclosed the fact that oteinkoff had negotiated with Rottenberg, Bismarck's secretary, with the view to making the Si. James' Gazette tho organ of Bismarck.
