ACCIDENTS FATALITIES, OFFENCES, ETC.
London, May 20. The barque Enohanterj from Sydney to Panama, is reported to have sunk at sea. Her crew were taken on board: by the Warlock. [A telegram from Sydney states th» Enchanter had an evpntfnl voyage. She left Cardiff in June 1888, with a of coals for Panama, apd unexpectedly turned 'ip in Sydney, short of provisions, after being 179 dajs out. She left again on December 20th.] Hokitik\, May 20. Henry Dean, a young man working at the sawmill, Kumara, who was injured by a falline tree, died at night. He never recovered consciousness. John Nolan a miner at the Blue, Spur, was killed in his sluicing claim this morn'ma by a fall of earth. Me was only partially buried, but falling stones struck him in several places. He never spoke, but moved his hands twice and-died as soon as extricated from the dirt. , Oamaru, May 20. A sad fatal accident occurred at AH Day Bay, about nine miles from Oamaru, this evening Mr Familton, a storekoeper at Kakanui, was driving with his son, aged eight years, across a creek when they met a waggon. The trap they were, in was thrown back into the-water over an embankraent, and the boy, who had clung to it, was drowned, as the trap fell on top of him. Assistance was procured, but it was too late to be of any use, ' May 22. An inquest was held to-day on the remains of the son of Mr J. D. Familton, of Kakanni, who was drowned by the overturning of a dray into the lagoon. The evidence shq wed that the dray of a ram named Morrison came into collision with the trap Mr Familton was .driving, and threw it over the bank. Mr Familton sang put for. assistance, but the man did not stop his horses and did not come back 'to the place. In his evidence Morrison said that ho could not do so because as soon as the accident occurred, one of his horses bolted, and he could not leave it, and he was carried away past the scene of the accident. Tbe jurv returned a verdict of accidental death, but added a rider (two of the jury dissenting) that Morrison was worthy of the gravest censure for not having turned back to ascertain what had occurred, after stopping his: horses. Auckland, May 21. Marsh Brown,.the great Ngapahi chief, died rather suddenly. He was a recent convert to Mormpnism. Richard Baryer, a settler at Waiwera, was drowned last night while taking a punt down the river. ' . Wellington, May 21. The body, of a woman was found floating in the harbor this morning, and hns been identified as that of Mrs McKen»a, a widow, living with an unmarried daughter in the'city. The woman left her ; house yesterday morning, the daughter understanding that she was going into tho country to visit friends. Dunedin, May 20. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a young man who has been for many years in tha Bank Department. He is charged with embezzlement. Examination so far shows forgeries and embezzlement to the extent of £IOO.
