ENGLISH POLITICS.
London, May 17. Mr A, J. Balfour, Secretory for Ireland, has promised to shortly introduce in the House of Commons the Irish Drainage of Land Bill and the Light Railways Bill of Ireland. In the House of Commons to-day a resolution moved by Mr Bradlaugh objecting to the proposed terms of commuting perpetual pensions was rejected by a majority of 49. The Budget has passed through committee. Mr Gladstone’s motion providing for equalising death duties on realty and personal estate was rejected by a majority of 76, The Standing Committee on Trade have rejected the danse in the Weights and Measures Bill compelling the sale of wheat by weight. May 18. In the House of Commons to-day Mr Goschen, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in reply to a question placed on the order paper by Mr Henniker Heaton, said that Government would decline to consider the propriety of appointing a committee to inquire into and report on the question of cable communication between England and the rest of the Empire. Another motion which Mr Heaton had on the paper; relative to penny postage, was replied to by Mr Smith, the lee-der of the House of Commons. Mr Smith declined to give Mr Heaton an opportunity of facilitating discussion on the extension of penny postage throughout the Empire and America, in order to celebrate the introduction of a jubilee penny postage system in the United Kingdom. The motion tabled by Mr H. Labou j chere in the House of Commons, in the direction of abolishing the House .of Lords, has been rejected by a majority of 41.
