, TIMARU MARKETS. At auction in Timaru on Saturday the following prices were realised: — Oats, 2s 4d to 2s 5d per bushel for Danish, 2s 6d to 2s 8d per bushel for milling; fowl wheat (free from tares, sorrel, etc), 2s 6d to 2s 9d per bushel; broken and threshing machine rubbish put into sacks, Is 6d to 2s perbu&hel; rye, from 2s 9d per bushel; potatoes, 65a per ton; oaten sheaf chaff, 70s per ton—in all cases sacks extra. AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT, Mr E. R, Guinness (for tbo Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week “tiding Saturday, May 18tb, as fol-. lows ; Washdyke Yards—Cattle: Average entries of beef have been brought forward, for which there was fair competition, the attendance being good. A slight improvement in prices, and the bulk of the yarding changed hands. We sold 11 head light weight heifers at £3 10s to £4los. Stores — We offered and sold a line of 27 head. Good 2-year-old steers brought £8 5s to £3 7s 6d, heifers (small) £ll7s 6d to £2s 5s a piece. Sheep—During the past fortnight there has been an increased demand for all classes, and a considerable number changed hands at these yards. Good entries came forward, with few exceptions all selling at very satisfactory prices to vendors. On account of several clients we sold the following lots:—Fat crossbred, at 9s 2d, 162 store aged crossbred ewes in lamb at 5s 6d, 195 crossbred lambs 6s 4d, 115 2-tooth quarter-hacks 7s 4d, 124 2-tooth crossbred (small) 9s. District Sales —At Pleasant Point, on the 6th inst., a fair entry of sheep and cattle, the attendance about the average, and the result satisfactory to all concerned. We sold mixed fat and crossbred ewes at 8s 6d, do culls 7s; half-bred ewes in lamb, 7s. Pigs and cattle were easier in values. Sheepskins—At our sale on Wednesday last, the usual attendance of buyers being present, prices were well maintained, We sold by auction and privately 2713. Best factory crossbreds 4s to 4s 3d, best butchers’ 3s 6d to 3s 9d, second quality 3s to 3s 3d, country lots Is 6d up to 3s, according to size and quality. Hides—A steady demand continues. We have quitted all on hand at late quotations. Fat—The satisfactory position of the market at Home has improved confidence, and prices display an upward tendency. Well saved rough fat is bringing 10s 6d to 12s 6d, medium 8s 6d to 10s. Tallow 15s to 17s 6d per cwt. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS, Sydney, May 17. The wheat arrivals for the week are 2038 tons from New Zealand, 145 tons from the other colonies. May 18. At a sale of grain ex Hauroto the following prices were realised: — Wheat, chick feed, 3s 6d to 3s 8d; Hunter’s white and pearl, 4s 2d to 4s sd; prime Tuscan, 4s 8d to 4s 9d ; oate, faulty, 2s 9d ; medium, 3s Id to 3s 2d; milling. 3s 3d to 3b 4d ; prime feed, 3a 4d to 3s 6d; maize, 3s 3d; bran, Is Id ; pollard, Is 2d. Melbourne, May 17. New Zealand prime malting barley is quoted at 5s S|d. ' ENGLISH MARKETS. London, May 17. Consols, 99i, firm. Australian wheat, ex wharhouse, 39s 6d ; business restricted. New Zealand long berried ditto, ex store, 38s 6d ; business also restricted. The copper market is steady, present quotations being £39. German beet sugar, 21s 3d; Java 235, the latter nominal. No. 1., best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 43s lOd. The tone of the tallow market is steady. Best mutton is ’quoted at 26s 6d, and best beef at 265. There is little enquiry for tanned hides, which fetch from 3?d per lb. May 18. New Zealand hemp is quoted at £36 5n to £36 10s. Best hides have declined one-eighth of a penny per pound.
