MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting o£ this Board was held in the Road Boad office, Peel Forest, on Friday, the 16th inst. Present —The Hon. J. B. A. Acland (chairman), Messrs Robert Mackay, E. Thew, G. J. Dennistoun, and A. Hawdon. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Dennistoun proposed, Mr Mackay seconded, and it was carried—- “ That Mr Tripp’s letter of the 27th April, held over at the last meeting of the Board be the first business of this meeting.” The letter was then read, in which he stated that his reason for not coming forward as a candidate for a seat on the Board was owing to the Board refusing to consent to the survey of the road deviations on the Mount Peel road, and having the land at present used as a road transferred to the Board. He considered in justice to ratepayers this ought to be done, as at present the Board was liable for any accident that might occur on the new road or on the abandoned one. A letter was read from Mr Acland, stating that as owner of the land taken for the deviation of road he had never objected to giving a title to the Board, but as a member of the Board he considered it an unnecessary expenditure of the ratepayers’ money, as the public had acquired a right to the road from having used it for the last ten or twelve years. Mr Thew said there was nothing before the Board to discuss, as the question had never been brought before it in a formal manner. After considerable discussion, it was proposed by Mr Thew, seconded by Mr Dennistoun, and carried — “ That Mr Tripp he informed that there is no mention in the minutes of of him, or any ratepayer, having brought the matter before the Board in a formal manner to have the road conveyed to the Board At the meeting of theßoard held on the 18th April, atjwhich Mr Tripp was present, although much discussion took place no resolution to have the road surveyed was moved by any member.” A letter was read from Mr Tripp, in reference to certain work done by him in preventing the overflow of the creek near his house. He had used several casks of cement on the work, and if the Board would pay for the cement he would pay all labor. —The Overseer reported upon the nature and extent of the work done, when it was proposed by Mr Dennistoun, seconded by Mr Mackay, and carried —“That Mr Tripp be* requested to send -in an account of the amount paid by him for the seven casks of ce'ment used on protective works, when a cheque for the amount will be forwarded him.”
It was also proposed by Mr Dennis-. toup, seconded by Mr Mackay, and carried—“ That after hearing the Overseer’s opinion on the protective works erected on the creek below Mr .Tripp’s house, the Board is of opinion that no further money be spent on the said worE” A letter was read from Mr GK J. Dennistoun, consenting to the road down Bethuae’s cutting being closed. The Clerk was instructed 4o write to Messrs Smithson and Eaymond, asking whether the dedication of the road leading through the Timaru Borough Council reserve to Mr Bitch’s land has been completed. Accounts to the amount of £lO9 Os 4d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
