CONCERT AND DANCE.
A highly successful tea, followed by a concert and dance, took place in the Hilton schoolroom on Friday evening last, in aid of the school funds. The room was decorated for the occasion with evergreens and flowers. There was, as is usual at A Hilton, a large attendance of the public. The tables were presided over by Misses Earl (2), Meredith, Patrick, Beattie, Bruce, Kelland, Prattley, and Tindall, who were kept busily engaged during the early part of the evening. At the concert held afterwards the room was crowded. The Rev. G. Barclay occupied the chair. The first name upon the programme was that of Mr J. Aitken, who in fine voice rendered the song, “ Friar of Orders Grey,” and in the second part contributed the recitation, “ All’s well that ends well,” for which he. was encored. Miss Andrews, who appeared to have a cold, rendered the well-known songs, “Anchored” and “ Robin Adair,” and also opened the second part of the programme with a pianoforte overture. Mr B. F. Cochrane was in excellent voice, and won great applause for his Scotch songs, “ Where has Scotland found her fame,’’ “ Cam’ ye by Athol,” “My heather hills,” and “ Standard on the braes of Mar.” Miss E. Meredith was very successful with the song, “ The biter bit,” and in the second part she received an encore for her singing of “ Tit for tat,” and gave \ “The Kerry dance.” Mr gave a reading from “The Lay of the Last Minstrel ” excellently. Mr Coventry contributed the song, “ The place where the old horse died,” and as an encore the comic song, “I’m such a simple young man.” Miss Menzies received a unanimous encore for her singing of “Tell me, my heart,” and responded with “ Cornin’ thro’ the rye.” During the‘evening the duet, “ Prythee Pretty Maiden,” was rendered by Miss Menzies and Mr Aitken, and was unanimously encored. Miss Andrews and Mr Aitken also gave the duet, “'Flow on thou shining river.” Mr R. Skinner fairly brought down the house with his performance on the bagpipes, giving “ Duke of Athol’s march,” and having to re-appear no less than three times. Mrs D. W. M. Burn, and Misses Menzies and Andrews acted as accompanists during the evening. On the proposition of Mr R. Skinner, chairman of the School Committee, seconded by Mr Steven, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the performers and those who had assisted at the tables, also to the chairman. The dance held after the concert was well patronised, and was kept up for several hours. Mr A. McKay made an efficient M.C.
