ACCIDENTS FATALITIES, OFFENCES, ETC.
New York, May 15. A number of highwaymen attacked an Army Treasury escort in Arizona, and wounded five, three fatally. Several of the escort made off on the appearance of the-robbers, who obtained booty to the extent of 30,000 dollars. Melbourne, May 15. The body of a man named Bryant has been found in the Yarra, with a bullet wound in the head. It is believed to be a case of mnrder. Brisbane, May 16. The schooner Rboderick Dhu has arrived from Mallicola Island, one of the New Hebrides. Her captain reports being informed by the natives that » Vessel bailing from Queensland was burnt off the coast there, and that many of those on board perished in the flames. The survivors, the natives asserted, died from starvation. The fire was caused by a woman dropping a match into a vessel containing pitch, which was stowed away under the bunks. Ihe flames spread so rapidly that many had not time to reach th« deck, and lost their lives. News of the disaster was confirmed by another tribe further down the coast, but they were less precise as to the destruction of the vessel and the loss of life. The Rhoderiok Dhu made diligent search in the neighborhood, but could find no trace of the vessel or her craw. A man named Murray shot a man named Rogers dead at Oloncurry. Murray and bis wife were both taken into custody. Gisborne, May 16. A young man named Henry Cannon was drowned while attempting to ford a flooded creek at Waipiri. Wellington, May 16, A threshing machine at Fealherston, belonging to Thomas George, was destroyed by fire this morning. Incendiarism is suspected. A man named William Media, who had been admitted to the hospital suffering from a dose of poison taken by mistake at Olaki, died to-day. , Dunedin, May 16. At the City Court to-day, Tee Fook and Te Nail were fined £2O or three months, for keeping a gaming boose where the game bak-s-pu wag played.
Mr Carcw agreed to state a case for appeal. Riverton, May 16, James Steele, a well-known livery stable-keeper, was picked up dead in bis stable yesterday morning. He was subject to apoplectic fits, and it is surmised that he died while suffering from the effects of one.
