GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

A special meeting of this hoard was held at the office on Wednesday, the 15th inst,, to elect a chairman. The returning officer reported the result of the late election to be the return of Messrs Slack, Kelland, Elatman, DeEenzy, and Grant as members of the board. Mr Kelland had much pleasure in proposing Mr Slack as chairman. He had acted in that capacity before, and had given every satisfaction. Mr DeEenzy seconded the proposition.

Mr Slack thanked them for the honor intended. He begged % to decline for several reasons. His affairs were unsettled at present, and for all he knew he might very soon be leaving the district. He could not at the presept time give that attention to the business that that the office of chairman required. He therefore begged to propose Mr Tlatman as chairman, who, he was quite certain, would give every satisfaction. Mr Kell and said he had every confidence in Mr Matman, but as Mr Slack was the oldest member on the

[board and held a seat for so many ■ years he should like him to be chairman. He could resign at any time if he was leaving the district. Mr Deßenzy also urged Mr Slack to accept, but he finally declined. ! Mr Grant then seconded Mr Slack's ' motion, and Mr Flatman was unanimously elected to the chair. Mr" Fiatman on taking the chair said he knew beforehand that it was Mr Slack's intention not to take the chairmanship. He himself had intended proposing Mr Kelland. He thanked the members for their confidence, and said with their assistance he would do his best for the district at large. He accepted the office with diffidence, coming after such an experienced chairman as Mr Postlethwaite, who had held office for so many years. Mr Deßenzy moved and Mr Grant seconded—" That Mr Shiers be reappointed clerk and oyerseer to the board at bis former salary."—Carried. The meeting then terminated.
