IRISH AFFAIRS.
London, May 12. The Freeman’s Journal assumes a neutral altitude in respect to the proposal to abolish the office of Viceroy of Ireland, but protests against Albert Victor being foisted on Ireland, The article concludes by saying that it is possible the residence of tbe Prince of Wales in Ireland would have a beneficial effect. Mr Balfour, Irish Secretary, publicly thanked Mr Heaton for his efforts to settle the disputes on the Vandeleur estates, and expressed the hope that having shown that arbitration could be successful the example would extend to other parts of Ireland, May 14. Messrs O’Brien and Harrington, dressed in their prison clothes, were serenaded by a number of admirers. The statement that the Marquis of Ormonde is to succeed the Marquis of Londonderry as Viceroy of Ireland is denied. The Government have agreed to consider the question of a royal Prince being appointed Viceroy of Ireland.
