GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of this board was held on Monday evening last for the purpose of considering the tenders received for the proposed water race. Present —Messrs W. S. Maslin, (chairman), A. Sherratt, N. Dunlop, J. Williams, J. Mundell, A. White, and E. Taylor. COEBESPONKES’CE. A letter was received from Mr A. Baker, re a shop erected by him which is not according to the building regulations.—Tbe letter was ordered to stand over till next meeting. Messrs Webster and Macdonald wrote on behalf of Mr Studhelme offering the board the price of land required for the race for £ls. — 1 Accepted. K f Mr Morrison wrote re the section loused by him from the board, and asking £4 per year compensation for the race passing through the section as it cut off pretty well the best of the land. The section it was mentioned is leased to Mr Morrison at £lO per annum. The compensation asked for would, amount to about £6O. The members thought the race could be carried through without going on the land. The chairman said he thought it could not, as though in some places Mr Morrison’s fence encroached upon the road, in others the road encroached upon the land. —Members thought the price asked was too much, and expressed a wish to have the engineer’s opinion as to whether the race could be cut without encroaching on the land before coming to a decision. Mr Marchant, who was present said he could not say until he had seen the spot. The matter was finally left with the chairman to try and arrange. TENDEES. Tenders were then opened for the construction of the water race as followsE, B. Sibley, Timaru, £283 15s; W, H. Eletcher, Temuka, j £260 4s 8d; D. Gregan, Geraldine, ’ i P£2B4 4s 2d; W. G. Sherratt and Co., Geraldine, £269 17s Bd. The chairman said he had enquired who the Co. was in the latter tender, and had received a letter from Mr C. E. Sherratt, in which the latter had acknowledged himself to be the principal member of the firm. The letter was read to the board. Mr White moved, and Mr Mundell seconded “That Mr Eletcher*s tender be accepted.” Mr A. Sherratt said that in view of the letter received from Mr C. E. Sherratt, which gave the board a substantial person as the contractor, he should move as an amendment that “ The tender of W. G. Sherratt and Co. be accepted, provided all the names in the Co. be taken.” Mr Williams seconded. Mr Sherratt explained that by accepting the tender of a firm in Geraldine, the contractor was always available to the board. Other members pointed out that no doubt tbe board would be asked to find work for the unemployed during the winter, and the Geraldine contractor would employ them, whereas an outside contractor would bring his men with him, and the board still be: left'to find work for the unemployed. Theamendment being put was carried, - Messrs Sherratt, Williams, Dunlop, and Taylor voting for it, and Messrs'White and Mundell against it. Messrs Meason and Marchant were to see that the contract was properly signed, and the meeting terminated.
