Trouble is brewing among the colliers at Newcastle, The men working in the South Waratah mine have passed h resolution demanding an increase of 6J per ton in hewing rates, and as the proprietors do not feel inclined to agree to the request a strike is feared. Brisbane, May 10. Mr Malbieson, of the Glasgow and South-Western Railway Company has been appointed Chief Commissioner of the Queensland Railways. Mr Gray, Under-Secretary, and Mr Johnston, Engineer of the eastern division of the Great Eastern Railway Company, have received the subordinate places on the Board.
