Cultivate the habit of asing spare moments, the amount of good work that could be accomplished in what is usually spent in listless minutes — quarters of Lours and waiting times—would fill us with wonder. by man. The Hon. Francis Ormond, M.L.C., of Victoria, whose death was announced the other day, was one of the greatest benefactors of that colony. He was the founder of the Ormond College, named after him, having given a grant to it of £38,883 out of the total cost up to last year of £44,898. He also founded a chair of music in connection with the Melbourne University, contributing no less a sum than £20,000, Through his instrumentality, and mainly owing to his liberality, a working man’s college has been established in Melbourne to improve the general and technical education of the working classes. Mr \ Ormond subscribed £5500 towards [ the building.
Jamaica is forsaking rum-making for fruit-raising. During 1888 there were exported 6,000,000 cocoanuta, more than 3,000,000 bunches of bananas, and 48,000,000 oranges. An old Waterloo veteran named Grant, who would have attained the venerable age of 107 had he lived till the 25th June next, died at Plattsburg, New South Wales, on April 10th, Ho joined the Duke of Argyle’s Militia when a young man, and after serving in Ireland, he, with others, volunteered when the Peninsular war broke out, serving for some time in Spain, On his return to England he served in one of the first companies of volunteers formed. He again saw active service at the battle of Waterloo, receiving a medal. He andyed in Victoria about 40 years ago. He was twice married, and was the father of 18 children—seven by his first wife and 11 by the second. The Christian World reports Dr, Donald McLeod as relating a story of a battle he had with an old Highland elder after preaching in a Highland church, where the music ressembled the scream of a duck. He asked the people why they did not get an organ to assist them in their praise, and the elder left off counting the coppers to say, “ Where can you find a text between the twa boards o’ the Now Testament saying we are to get an organ ? ” To which Mr McLeod retorted, “And where can you find a text between the twa boards o’ the New Testament saying you are to have a precentor ? ”
