Tbmuka Tow» Board, —A special meeting of the Temuko Town Board takes place to-morrow evening. Volunteer Bale, The annual grand ball under the auspices of the Temuka Rifle Volunteers will bo held on the night of the 24th. Advance in Sugar. —The Colonial Sugar Company have made another advance of 10s per ton. The price of all grades of sugar has been increased ia five weeks by 30s per ton. Geraldine Fortnightly Sale, The fortnightly sale of stock at Goraldme takes place to-morrow. Entries with Messrs Mundell and Co. and Messrs Webster and Macdonald will be found in our advertising columns. Both firms book to hour of sale. Eligibility of Teachers.-— ln regard to the Taurunga School Committee erabrogolio legal advice obtained by the Auckland Board of Education states that the teacher of a public school may hold office as member of a School Committee. Concert at Pleasant Point. —A grand concert will be given in the new Catholic Church at Pleasant Point on Thursday evening next, the proceeds being devoted to the church building fund, A choice programme of songs, recitations, dramas, ate,, has been prepared, and no doubt there will be a large attendance. Social Reform Association.— At the annual meeting of the Social Reform Association at Dunedin it was staled that
an invitilioo had been sent lo Henry George to visit the colony. A resolution was passed in favor of land nationalisation, ! The Society has been staited to consider questions of social reform, and has already taken an active part in connection with the sweating system. Tea and Gift Auction at w in , Chester. —A tea and gitt auction, to raise funds for the purpose of enabling St. John the Evangelist’s Church, to bo re-opened free of debt, will take place in the Winchester Schoolroom on Friday evening. The tea will be on the tables at G.3®, and the gift auction will commence at 8. Great exertions are being made to make both tea and concert a success.
Rich Silver Mine.— lt looks very much like us if the world-renowned Barrier Reef ; Ranges would have to take a back seat. By ' the South African mail wo learn that a wonderfully rich silver rain* has besn discovered within eight miles of Pretoria—the capital of the South African Republic—in which the principal leader rune 3000 oz of silver to the ton! From several assays as much as 46000 z haye been obtained! The name of the mine is “ Willows Silver Mine,” locally known as “Skills Silver Mice,” and it is anticipated that it will bo second only lo Muckie’s famous silver mine in America, and will put into the shade even such rich gold mines as the Robinson, whoso £1 shares are now worth. £65, and the Shaba. In order to develop the mine a company has been floated, with a capital of £IOO,OOO in £1 shares, and when the mail loft these were eagerly inquired after at £l3 10s to £ls each.
Athletic. —A match took place at 13 eoheim on Saturday between F. Qauk- | roclger, a well-known Marlborough pedestrian, and J. Biiu. a eprint runner from Canterbury and dago. The rtiblances were 100 yards, 220 yards, and 440 yards, for £2O a-side. Bain won the 100 yards by about half a yard, but Qaukrodger ran clear away from bun in tha other two events. In the 440 yards Bain was bsat&n before half tho distance had b?on covered, and did not finish. Couasin®,—The Dunedin Plumpton meeting concluded on Saturday. The Sr. Leger. 38 dogs, winner £32, runnerup £ls, third dog £B, was won by Mr Brooke’s Black Pine, with Mr Scaolan’s Mariner runner-up, and lona third. The Forbury All-Aged Stakes, of 40 dogs, winner £32 10 s, runnev-up £ls, third dog £B, was won by Mosers Mills’s Fugue, with Mr Gardener’s Flora runner-up, and Botoraahana third. In each event there were a number of smaller prizes. The Consolation was won by Mr Blackham’s Red Pino, with Messrs Mills’s Presto runner up. The meeting was a great success. Accident.— Dr J. B. Hayes met with a disagreeable accident on Saturday last. Accompanied by Mr Bryurs ho was proceeding to the Kakahu by way of Palmer’s crossing. On entering the river one wheel of the vehicle he was driving dropped into a hole, and the doctor was thrown into the river. The partially capsized gig righted itself when relieved of his, weight, and Mr Bryars managed to secure the reins and drive the horse ashore. The doctor, however, was washed down stream until brought up by a snag. From this he was able with some difficulty to make his way ashore, very cold and wet, but unhurt. He made the beat of his way to Mr Hayhurst’s mill, where he was provided with a change of clothes, when he was able to proceed on his journey. ’ Wesleyan Bazaar, Temuka. The bazaar in aid of tho funds of the new Wesleyan Church, Temuka, was continued on Saturday. In the afternoon Mr Maslidj of Geraldine, submitted for sale the live stock, which fetched satisfactory prices. In the evening there was a crowded attendance, it being almost impossible for the visitors !o get about. The balance of goods loft from the previous day found, with few exceptions, ready purchasers. Tho refreshment table, at which a “ square meal ” could be obtained at the moderate price of sixpence, was literally beseiged, and by about eleven o’clock there was not as much left as would provide a decent meal for a mouse. At half-past nine o’clock the sale commenced, and the various articles submitted, especially produce, fouod ready purchasers at satisfactory prices. Tha “ autograph quilt” «as keenly competed for, and fell to the nod of Mr Watson, of Waitohi, for the handsome »mn of £lO, Amaug many energetic w-orkers, Messrs H. Miles, Longatou, J. an I W. Holwell, W. Fawdruy, J. Hooper, . nd E. Williams were conspicuous. To the former much credit is duo for the general management of the bazaar. When all the ladies worked so well, it is invidious to particularise, but special mention maybe made of the exertions of ihe Misses Lewie, Barrett, and E. Brown, the latter being wonderfully successful in disposing of numerous fancy articles. Tho bnziar must be considered as a particularly successful and creditable effort upon the part of the congregation.—la our advertising columns the Ksv. 11. S.
