MISCELLANEOUS.
Thellorse Shoe Hotel,in Tottenham Court road, London, was sold recently for the enormous sum of £90,000, There are, it seems, schools for dunces in Germany, at which dull children receive instruction suited to their capacity. There are about 70,000 lace-makers in Normandy, and altogether in France there are nearly 200,000 women engaged in this industry. It is saitf that a legacy of £IO,OOO has been left to Mr Clement Scott, the dramatic critic of the Daily Telegraph, by an unknown lady admirer, A social journal informs a correspondent that “ when a gentleman and lady are walking up the street, the lady should walk inside the gentleman.” A way to prepare soft coal so that there will be no accumulation of soot in the chimney, and that the undersides of the stove lids will be kept clean, is as follows:—For a ton of coal buy a few pennyworth of common salt, make a brine of it, and pour over the coal. Maeaiah Henley, the man who invented roller skates, lives in Richmond, Indiana. He was a very poor wood sawer, and it took nearly his last dollar to pay for . his patent, hut the craze for skating that spread over the country made him rich. The home of the President of the United States consists of five bedchambers, two dressing rooms, and corridor on the second floor. That is all. there is of it. Except on rare occasions the remainder of the house is open to the public all day. These living apartments lack the quality of “homeliness,” which Mrs Harrison, like Mrs Cleveland and all other American women, so well knows and thoroughly appreciates. Said a woman the other day; I would rather have a man’s opinion about mv gowns any time than a woman’s." He does not know once in a hundred times what the material is or what it is worth. He does know, however, whether or not it is becoming. Now a woman will sit up in your room and tell you what a beautiful gown it is. All the while she is looking you over from head Co foot, saying to herself that the gown cost so much, and the buttons so much. You can see that she thinks she could have bought the gown for 20dols less and have it made up in a much prettier way. If the gown pleases a man he shows it in his looks, and perhaps says something pleasant about it. Whether he says anything or not, if he likes it, his look of approbation is more than satisfactory, while if the gown is not pretty or becoming he simply doesn’t notice it. This is the. way of a man, he never sees a thing that is not attractive.
