THE UNITED STATES ANNEXATION OF CANADA.

gomo time ago wo had an article on Sir John Macdonald’s proposil to take a plebiscite of iho (Lnarliaus with the view of ascertaining whether 'be people were i,i fiivor of annexation wit I' iho United Slates and a gentleman in Geraldine sent us tho’following poem on the subject. It got mislaid, ami hence (ho i-iason it Ims not appeared before. It is taken from a Canadian paper : "WHEN CANADA COME 3 IN.” TO UNCLE SAM. Don’t, dream about ir, Uncle Sam You’ll never see the day When Canada will listen To what such »a you can say ; Along her choson groove she 11 run, Whoe’er shall lose or win—--Bam, you’ll bo as grey as a grizzly bear When Canada conies in ! Around her twines fair Freedom’s arms Such liberty as never Layished her prostituted charms, South of St. Lawrence Biver Blooms fresh amongst her maple trees Inspires her kith and kin With loyalty— the bulb will freeze Ere Canada comes in ! She loves the law end order Which rule her happy land ; With anarchy end murder She will not soil tier hand. The bowie and revolver Her friendship cannot win ; This northern maid, if cold, is pure You cannot coax her in ! Your brittle tie of marriage Fallacious rope of sand Foul mildew on morality, Curse of a Godless laud ! A farce, a wretched travesty, A nation’s crying sin, A bloek on wedlock’s puritv ■ You cannot “ take us in ! Monroe proclaimed it! did he ? Who cares a pin fur Monroe ? Or the nonsense which he uttered More than seventy years ago P Brag and swell as big as you like In Fourth of July orations, When frenzied fancy makes you think Your own the Queen of Nations! This mighty land is British soil ; And the Yankee possum’s skin Will be as dry as a corn busk Ere Canada comes in ! There are fish enough in the sea for you, And quite enough for us; And fur seals around Alaska, too, Without making such a fuss ! Your honest hands—our cousins— Are defiled with scale and fin— The stars may wave a thousand years Fro Canada comes in ! Keep on your own path, Uncle Sam. Reform your ballot-box; Shun, if you can, the coming jam—’Twill try you, tho’ “ cute ” as a fox. Anarchy and dishonesty Are each a nation’s sin ; Go wash your face, but never dream That Ganad&’U come in! We do nat want your spangled rag ! You may waye it o’er the South, Where the darkeye down’d the palmetto flag In the burst of their freedom’s youth. On the day when expediency clone Set the m.’nacled negro free, And humanity blushed when the deed was done In the name of Liberty ! We want no closer union With you—you’re of errant kin ; Mind your own business, Uncle Sam — We never shall come in ! —William Pittman Lett. Ottawa, January 3,1889,
